This isn't directed towards anybody here. This is just a small rant I have about a friend of mine.
She appreciates 'clean' music, in other words, if you thumb through her playlist you'll most likely find the latter albums of popular artists. There seems to be a correlation between an artist's rise in popularity and the amount of dubbing and pitch correcting they do in the recording stage. That creates, what I consider, a synthetic feel. Have you heard Green Day's last album? It's almost unbearable.
That being said, she mistakes intentional devation from the song's scale/key (to cause conflict) as being 'messy.' Even when the song returns, which is supposed to create a fealing of relief, she still dwells on that part she considers messy. Bands that utilize this conflict in their songwriting are completely out of the picture for her.
Any band that didn't use top-notch recording equipment and 100 hours of mastering is apparently messy too.
Yeah, I probably seem like a huge douche about this, but it bugs me.
I'm no better in other respects. I'm sure I piss a lot fo people off when I admit things I'm not fond of in music.

That's true. There was a few songs on a band called Beulah's first album that sound atrociously artificial.
I think, though, most of the time when lo-fi sounds artificial, it's because it's made by a band that has access to better means of production, but choose to record in low fidelity for one reason or another.
