i listened to full moon fever

boy oh boy

the first two songs (free fallin and won't back down) are pure pop rock perfection. so simple, yet so catchy. it's devious

the rest? not so much. really uninspired americana rock. what a let-down.

kate bush - the dreaming (january 2)

not as accessible as hounds of love... not quite as good either, imo

(hounds of love is the only other kate bush album i've listened to)

the instrumentation here is rather sparse, but her vocals are still on point

pull out the pin is pretty good, as is suspended in gaffa

definitely stresses the "art" in art pop

second half of the album isn't as good

overall i can see myself revisiting some of these tracks, but i don't know if it's something i'll listen to in full again

xtc - skylarking (january 3)

very poppy, but in the best way possible. it makes me want to get up and do cartwheels

i get some bowie vibes from songs like that's really super, which might be the best track on the album

only complaint is the last few songs fall a little flat. especially dear god. feels pretty heavy-handed and clashes with the rest of the album

otherwise, was not expecting such an awesome album! definitely something i see myself returning to

talk talk - spirit of eden (january 4)

i was expecting a lot from this since i've only ever heard good things about it

it's... pretty boring

maybe i'm just a sucker for the crescendocore of godspeed you! black emperor, but this sounds pretty standard for post-rock

that said, it came out in 1988, which is pretty impressive. and there are a few moments that made me go "damn..."

the organs sound real nice, i wish they were more prominent

the rest is a real snoozer

the fall - this nation's saving grace (january 5)

don't know a whole lot about the fall except the lead singer called mumford and sons a bunch of retards, which i agree with

the album is pretty okay

i like spoilt victorian child and barmy the most

but it's too sloppy and i don't like mark e smith's voice all that much

punk in general is bullshit

but this is post-punk, so...

new order - power, corruption & lies (january 6)

great opening track

for the most part, it isn't that bad. some of it is kind of forgettable

i definitely like the "proto-indie" sound of age of consent & leave me alone better than the okayish alternative dance stuff

though i can get behind tracks like your silent face

pretty good

glenn branca - the ascension (january 7)

intro was meh

the spectacular commodity is pretty good, there are some neat moments within the 12 minute track, especially toward the end when the whole song kind of blossoms, but some of it feels masturbatory

structure felt like filler

listening to light field is when it really hit me that this was a record released in 1981. most of it sounds like it could have been released today

i have mixed feelings regarding the final track. first few minutes were great, but it kind of overstays its welcome

forgot how this turned up on my to-listen list but here we are

its new wave-y synthpop from japan

forgot to mention: for the second-week of my listening experience, i'm changing the theme from "critically acclaimed 80's albums" to "albums on my to-listen list", many of them are just obscure oddities i've found in the depths of rateyourmusic

anyway, it sounds weird... not in an experimental or avant garde way, in a "i dont like this" way

actually, drip dry eyes is an okay track

but otherwise it's fairly mediocre. nothing to comment on. the novelty of listening to japanese synthpop from 1980 wears off pretty fast.

i really don't know what i was expecting

post-rock from japan

wow...

opening track is great

i was expecting something kind of moody and brooding, as that seems to be the tone of most post-rock

however, this sounds very triumphant and upbeat. psychedelic at some points

and there's even some guitar shredding here and there. it sounds great, even if it does overstay its welcome

the album loses momentum towards the second half, which is a shame, because it really had a lot of potential. last track is pretty nice tho

otis g johnson - everything god is love '78 (january 10)

late 70's minimal synth gospel. because why not?

it definitely has "outsider" music qualities - very lo-fi, somewhat eerie, but quite compelling

otis' voice... you can tell singing isn't his strong suit. it's kind of shaky and off key, but it's also strangely warm and full of life

however, it gets very repetitive. i guess you can only do so much with just a synth and drum machine. but do the tracks really need to go on for 7 minutes?

thankfully, the sound it repeats is soothing... for your soul

oneohtrix point never - garden of delete (january 11)

a release i've been sleeping on. i really liked 2011's replica so i'm expecting something of around the same quality

it's a rather aggressive record, and when it's not being aggressive it sounds at least ominous, with its loops and warped voice samples

but all of its darkness makes for a compelling listen; it's a solid album from front to back

that said, there aren't many amazing moments. none of it is bad, but none of it is particularly challenging. it all sounds pretty par for the course from opn

but not all music has to reinvent the wheel. opn found his niche and stuck with it. not as novel as replica, but still good
