Holy SHIT is it depressing sometimes. I am starting counseling in a couple weeks to figure out ways to deal with it.

Counselling is good. Just try not to drink a lot as that makes things worse. When was the last time you went on holiday? Perhaps buying a holiday and have something to look forward to might help.

Why do more people *not* do it? I think it's a positive thing that American culture is fairly willing to recognize how prevalent mental illness and situational mental illness/maladjustment really are, without much stigma about addressing it. Pretty much everyone has to get medical treatment at some point for bodily injury, I don't see how it should be any different for mental or emotional issues.

We had a popular resident die unexpectedly this week, all of our new kitchen staff are unreliable young black females who churn out shockingly horrible food on dirty dishes, we have five pregnant coworkers at all times, a lot of the staff has become suddenly itchy, no one knows why, we had four falls in one week, so state is probably coming.

I find taking up an interest in history helps put things in perspective. Really once you know about the shit that people did to each other from the ancient world up to present, it's hard to get too depressed. Humans kind of suck in the whole being-kind-to-one-another department. It doesn't make wrongs right again, but it helps to think that the wrongs of today are a little less harsh. Because being flayed alive and then having to watch, while dying, your skin stuffed with straw and burned in effigy or ripping open pregnant women and beating them with their fetuses is just a reality some of our ancestors had to deal with.
Again it doesn't make any wrongs right again, but it just reminds you of how cruel it might be. Or maybe you just get jaded about humanity in general and don't expect any kindness.

I was thinking specifically of the treatment of the supporters of Phraortes of Media by Darius I in putting down a Medean rebellion and the actions of King Menahem of Israel in putting down a revolt in Tiphsah. The OT in 2 Kings 15:16 even makes mention of him "ripping open the pregnant women", so I guess that was a real feather in his cap that lots of people liked to talk about. I'm sure you can find numerous atrocities throughout history, but even the way common people lived at certain times and places is difficult to imagine enduring.
