Topic: Star Wars v. Star Trek: Epic Battle of Nerdom

Anonymous A started this discussion 10 years ago #48,926

Is the comparison and often times fights between said fans due to the 'Star' in both titles?

Would this had been the case had either of them had a different title?

@OP
Which is the one with the blonde robot woman and the guy who played Dr. Bashir in Deep Space 9? I liked that one.

OP raises an interesting point. Aside from the fact that they both take place in space, they're very different. Star Trek is very sci-fi, while Star Wars is almost completely fantasy and almost no real science.

I believe the official terminology is "space fantasy".

I just had another thought.

Why are Doctor Who fans called Whovians; while Star Trek fans have two names, Trekkies and Trekkers; yet Star Wars fans do not have a name like Warians and are simply referred to as fans?

My Little Pony fans even has two labels, bronies and pegasisters.

Did a name just never catch on or is the Star Wars franchise just too mainstream for labels?

But "Nerds" is an umbrella term that also applies to the others.

I don't know. Why don't Star Wars fans have a moniker?? Star Trek fans are arguing over the Trekkie / Trekker distinction. The subculture has gone far enough that people are arguing about the label thinking that Trekkie is demeaning... (I will happily label myself a Trekkie any day) WTF Star wars fans? Get on the ball. I'm happy to call you nerds in the meantime.

Although, numerous people have listed themselves as being a part of the Jedi religion in censuses and polls... Maybe Forcians? Nah, sounds kind of crap.

It has been previously established that the correct term is "faggots".

Bronies and pegasisters are the only term used to describe them in works of media and news articles. So therefore that is their label. Anything else is merely slang or derogatory.

The only term used to describe them amongst credible circles is "ponyfags". This is, indeed, an intentionally derogatory term. Thanks.
