Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU started this discussion 10 years ago#48,742
To celebrate the holidays, and to get a better understanding of dutch culture, minichan will be hosting a Zwarte Piet costume contest. For those of you who don't know what it is, here is an article about it! I have attached a picture of an example of what it looks like. The winner of this contest will receive Minichan Gold™. What are the benefits of that, you might ask? Well, if you come in first place, you may just find out!
Rules:
1. It must be a picture taken of you holding or otherwise displaying a sign that says minichan.org with today's date.
2. If you want to have friends join in as Sinterklaas, or other seasonally appropriate character (Hannukah Harry, Kwanza Karl et al.) that will count as bonus points towards your submission.
3. Anyone who is not conducive to this festive activity risks being permabanned!
By submitting your photo, you foreit any copyright claim you may have to it, and authorize minichan.org and any of its subsidiaries to use these pictures for any purposes they see fit, including but not limited to marketing purposes, promotional materials, and custom toilet paper.

This is more about the holiday spirit than about adhering to one particular holiday! Hannukah was also over a week ago but we accommodate that.

Why do you say a blackface competition is funny?
r04r replied with this 10 years ago, 2 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^][v]#636,419
@previous (M)
It's not blackface, it's Zwarte Piet which is not racist like your American/British blackface. Please stop forcing your American/British views upon Dutch traditions.

it's a black character that's traditionally caricaturized in an obviously nasty servile and unrealistic way and the role inherently exclusive of actual black people how is that defensible

It's just as racist as apartheid, which is not racist at all.

That is not even close to reality. Please, study up on the tradition of Sinterklaas before you make any judgement. Zwarte Piet is a highly respected member of a cherished holiday tradition, and it is not racist in any way. Again, please stop forcing your British/American views on Dutch traditions. It is really unbecoming. Next you'll tell me it's racist to celebrate anyone other than the Greendale Human Being just because the character's skin happens to have a specific collor.
@previous (Q)
See the above. I realize that it's incredibly difficult for you racists to turn off the racism goggles you're viewing the world with, but I assure you there is no racism to be found here.

So, after Alphabeting this tradition, it's just people dressing up as a character from Dutch folklore, correct?

Pretty much. Once a year there's an event similar to Christmas where Sinterklaas comes from Spain in his boat, bringing gifts and presents for the children. Where Santa Claus has elves as his helper Sinterklaas has Zwarte Pieten as his helpers. The Zwarte Pieten do the actual distributing of gifts and handing out of candy, thus every child is brought up to love them and become ecstatic when they arrive due to the handing out of delicious candy.

So yeah, I think it's pretty harmless, then. Understandably, it looks a lot like blackface to certain foreign observers, and that can be scary/offensive. But it's not really the same as blackface in intention or meaning. So I don't think it really promotes racial hatred or anything
The English Wikipedia article did claim it has become controversial in your country, though. Any truth to that?

Yes, it became controversial due to foreign influences. Lots of immigrants and other foreigners respond to it like the posters in this topic, due to them not understanding the history of the event. They just see the Zwarte Pieten and go "OH NO ITS BLACKFACE THIS IS HORRIBLY RACIST OMG OMG OMG". Luckily almost everyone seems to ignore them, though. Other than it being brought up again every year. Some event hosts/TV shows have started doing "Rainbow Petes" where they make up the no-longer-Black Petes to be random colors of the rainbow. But that just looks really weird, and I think most places still use the traditional Black Pete.
I genuinely don't think there's anything racist about Black Pete. The character is not depicted in any kind of subservient way, and as a child I had nothing but positive associations with it. I was just really excited to be getting presents and candy each year, so what if some of the people handing that out happen to be depicted as black.

This looks like an excuse to do blackface. You only have to be on irc for 5 minutes to hear a racist comment and that is enough to suggest this isn't about Dutch tradition.

If you aren't him, then you are a very good tribute. Like a sequel to ninjj that legitimately captures what the original ninjj was all about.
