it's historic, you bastards. why is no one talking about this. it was amazing. it was perfect. how can people not be excited about this? they just launched a mother fucking rocket and turned the first stage around and fucking landed the motherfucker on the motherfucking ground while the second stage went up into space and launched 11 god damned satellites! this is bigger than the Space Shuttle stuff! the Falcon 9 carries 9 of the most advanced and highest thrust engines ever produced and the Falcon 9 heavy configuration will double the payload capacity of our biggest heavy lift launch vehicles in use today. and it's going to be reusable! AND SPACEX IS CREATING AN EVEN BIGGER MORE EFFICIENT ENGINE FOR THEIR SUPER HEAVY LIFT VEHICLE THAT'S PLANNED TO TRAVERSE INTERPLANETARY DISTANCES. IT'S 3 TIMES BIGGER THAN THE FALCON 9 AND CAN CARRY 100 TONS TO THE SURFACE OF MARS! DECADES, PEOPLE, WE'RE DECADES AWAY FROM ROUTINE INTERPLANETARY TRAVEL AND CONGRESS WON'T HAVE THEIR GRUBBY IGNORANT MITTS ON THE FUNDING ANYMORE!

i guess eventually if they make it as routine as commercial air travel then you'll end up with a few crazies that slip through and try and cause a catastrophe. sure. but in the more immediate future the cost of launches will start to drop. that'll hopefully mean more money to spend on payloads

for a long time i just though Elon musk was playing billionaire playboy tony stark wannabe with his electric cars and rocketships, i thought he was putting the cart before the horse and was building "cool stuff" that would ultimately lose out to the tried-and-true. but he's not fucking up and his shit isn't failing. yet. his cars aren't making him buckets of money and SpaceX is a huge multi-billion dollar drain but Musk is 100% dedicated to what he's doing and he's hyper focused on his companies. he's not playing around. this is some serious shit to him, and if you take him at his word and don't believe him to be disingenuous then he's doing it to change the world. evidently he firmly believes that now is the time to become a multi-planetary species, and that doing so is the only way to ensure our survival. not 500 years from now. now. and he's putting his money where his mouth is.

I am an adventurous person. Love science. Life on Mars would be stuck inside in close quarters. Space suits to go outside for a few steps. None of the photos of that place look inviting. Mars in uninhabitable.

but that's... that's not what he's trying to prove. and that's not a reason to go. he's talking about (and literally building towards) the first permanent colony on another planet. he's not talking an Apollo "look what we can do first" kind of thing, he's trying to lay the groundwork for permanent settlements and continuous transportation back and forth in increasing numbers. it's a very, very "big picture" idea and "mars not looking inviting" and being inhospitable are such narrow slices of the bigger picture that they are irrelevant to the goal of becoming a multiplanetary civilization. the technical problems are not insurmountable; yes it'll be extremely difficult, dangerous, and expensive, but it's not impossible and it's not silly.
sitting on this rock until the oceans evaporate would be silly. at some point we either leave this planet and expand into the solar system (and then to other stars) or life is doomed. and leaving the planet and going to another one is hard. taking enough people to build a sustainable population is even harder. and ultimately altering the planet to make it more suitable for human life is enormously hard. but you gotta start working on these problems some day, and you can always kick the can down the road and say it'll be easier in the future. you don't start by terraforming a planet, you start by figuring out how to send people there. we can start today. there's no reason to wait, it's time to start doing it.

we'll do the moon too, but it won't be spaceX. china, russia, eu. maybe even nasa again since they're really wanting to do their lagrange point stations. spaceX is going to mars.
also, i skimmed it. pretty sure i've read it before. it reads:
