Just got back from watching the new movie. It's pretty good, has a lot of parallels with the original two trilogies. Pretty much every character from the original movies is represented in a new character in this one. I thought it would be tacky at first, but it's done well.
I was also afraid it would be too childish since it's made by Disney, but this wasn't the case. Not any more childish than the original movies, at least.
My only real complaint is the blood that Finn got on his helmet. It was literally the only time people were shown bleeding in all of the movies. The guy he was kneeling over was shot by blaster fire, which is supposed to cauterize the wounds immediately. 0/10

Lol, I just looked it up and it seems the US is getting it later than my country. That is a first. It started showing here yesterday and my mothers work rented out an entire cinema room for employees and their friends/families. There were free (for me, obviously paid for my the employer) drinks and snacks before and after. Shit was cash.

What could give these communities such ideas? Rey wasn't exactly that overpowered.

Could be that she quickly goes from a unimportant, fairly average person to somebody of great skill and importance. Some might perceive that as being sue-ish.

At least they didn't pull another "Anakin completely destroys the droid control ship at the perfect moment" like they did in episode one. The stuff in VII was at least a bit subtle.

have you read the fan theories about darth plagius? if not they make the prequels a lot more compelling. if the new supreme leader guy is him then everything makes a lot of sense and feels less disconnected

I had the impression she "learned" some of Kylo's abilities when he tried to mind-rape her during the interrogation scene. It was almost immediately afterwards that she used the "Jedi mind trick" on the nearby guard (who, incidentally, was played by Daniel Craig in an uncredited appearance)

Maybe if you gave a qualified argument about micro-gravity spaceship rotation and battle tactics being more in line with real physics in Babylon 5 or the quality of CGI and its use or something - you might be excused for finding a reason to think that.

Quoted for truth. You have to watch the entire series of Babylon 5 to really engage in the amazing story arc though. Also it had brilliant characters, Londo and G'Kar were legends.

My brother pointed something out which makes a lot of sense. He says he likes that Luke failed in his efforts to reinstate the Jedi Order, because unlike the old continuity where he essentially goes on to bring back the order here it shows that maybe he rushed into something that he wasn't ready for yet. He pointed out how Luke always had it lucky when it came to his accomplishments minus a few turmoils like losing his hand and whatnot. Here we get to actually see Luke lose some battles and now upon Rey's arrival to his hiding he has a second chance to redeem his failure.

If the First Order were able to drain a star's energy to near white dwarf levels to recharge their weapon, then how did they charge it the first time if the weapon was constructed on a stationary planet?
If the energy also passed through the planet's core then wouldn't this indicate that the planet didn't have an iron core in which there could be no magnetic field and gravity?
I know science isn't Star Wars' strong suit, but isn't this impractical?

it was called a "hyperdrive weapon" or some such nonsense and the energy was stored in hyperspace or something. idk, just handwavium. that was one of the things that turns me off of the movie, just another deathstar and yet another movie that ends with bombing runs on a superweapon. i was really hoping that they were going to give a really good twist and have the rebels lose really really really hard. so much of the movie mirrored A New Hope and i thought maybe, maybe, that the mirroring would invert and the rebels would finally lose one as hard (or harder) than the empire previously. but no, photon torpedoes into gaping weakness :/ i though, "oh man, this shit has got to be bait. bait the rebels to attack, wipe out their fleet then destroy the rebel base and vaporize leia with it." that's what i thought was going to happen. Kylo Ren would be killing his mother, kinda like how anakin went psychotic after his mother died his training would be able to complete. then han and rey and finn have to go find luke.
i was disappointed to see they went with the bad guys losing hard in the end. but whatever, abrams got to do his homage, maybe the next guys will go somewhere new with all this.
