I saw it last night, and also read the one major spoiler that I assume you're talking about. Still an excellent movie though, as it's about the journey rather than the destination. I'm not even that big of a Star Wars guy but I still really liked it.

it's probably the same spoiler, pretty much there was just the one big spoiler thing that happened. overall i liked it, but i could certainly feel the absence of George Lucas. it felt like a star wars film because it had familiar characters and familiar ships and even a ton of "easter eggs" but it felt... it felt like the torch was passed. definitely not a lucas film. for all the shit talking i do about the prequels they still felt like Star Wars movies in a way that this new one didn't quite capture. i can't really articulate it. i think abrams did a good job, but i honestly think the star trek reboots are better work. maybe it's that he had more freedom, and with star wars he was really hemmed into making a "george lucas movie" rather than a jj abrams movie and i think he did as good a job as anyone at paying homage to the original trilogy's aesthetic, but try as he might i was distinctly aware that george lucas didn't have a fingerprint on it. it's almost like abrams recycled the most popular plots from the original trilogy and wove them together into a new single movie using replica props and filmed it in Tunisia. "no one can hate that," says jj abrams. he's probably right, it was exciting and even the new characters are cool and it had everything from the movies everyone loved. but still. no one is better at being george lucas than george lucas. probably not going to be nostalgic about the new franchise. i'm sure i'll be a fan, but i doubt it's going to inspire me the same way the original trilogy did or make me feel passionately as the prequels did (i have strong opinions on them). jj abrams has made a good movie, but i'm just not quite sure it's great.

now that i've seen it i'm reading all the fan conjecture about the plot. some of it actually makes the prequels make more sense. they could actually use the sequels to make the larger story make more sense and have more continuity. interesting. unfortunately the fan theories involve god damned midifuckingchloreans. but it makes sense and would tie everything together pretty fucking neatly. but, it would seem that there is pretty good evidence that the writers didn't intend any of the meaning fans see. maybe it's right, probably it's wrong, but it kinda doesn't matter because there are 2 different directors coming along and they may decide to run with the fan theories because they make so much sense. (they also all practically come from the extended universe.) anyway, even if unintentionally abrams has left his successors with a great jumping off point. we'll see how far from the tree the sequels to the prequels sequels lands.

Just saw it. I really see what squeegee meant about them recycling plot points from previous films. Not that it ruined the film or anything, I still very much enjoyed it.
Though I was slightly disappointed that a cool-looking female villain was introduced, only for her to do nothing and then be humiliated. Maybe her time will come next film, then.

i did really enjoy it. i streamed it last night at watched it again and paused and googled everything i was curious about. it's interesting how much information is already out there. i was able to google "how the fuck did [X] get the [X] from the Empire Strikes Back?" and i was able to come up with the explanation from the EU because the [x] makes an appearance in those stories as well. How [X] actually came to acquire it is "a story for another time," but my curiosity has been sated. i also googled the villains and learned the known back stories and the fan speculation that would tie everything up in such a neat package.
i might be wrong about not loving these new movies, if they succeed at fixing the prequels and retcon in satisfactory explanations to hem up the continuity then i might end up being a huge fan. and i guess it's not that 1-6 don't have continuity, but there are some kinda gaping plot holes and ridiculousness that need further exploration to not just be retarded.
