All the whining in the news about iPhone tracking, & where users travel too, is nonsense.
Consider this....When you have turned your phone off, and your phone rings or picks up text...How does the cell tower know where you are?
It not only knows where you are located, it also knows how much power to send you, so your phone will pick up the message, and or ring you.
Depending on whether you use GSM (AT&T or T-Mobile) or CDMA (Verizon or Sprint) your phone when off, is sending out a burst called the pilot/roaming/registration/ tone/signal {please do not nick pick this simplified explanation}The off phone message occurs many times a second.
The cell tower sees you and makes a note in log files. When you move on down the street you will continuously be tracked to some degree of accuracy by your cell provider and it will remain in the logs for a long time.
Accuracy of where you were depends on how new your phone is, which provider you use and how up to date the system is where you are located.
Phones capable of E911 and 911 can provide at the moment of call, your exact whereabouts down to which corner of the room you are in, IF its the best of current designs and many are!!! Otherwise when the Paramedics arrive they may have to look right or left on the street to locate you.
The only way you can stop the tracking is by removal of the battery. However IF some law agency has received the necessary court order - the highest level of court orders from the Feds, then even a battery removal may not end tracking.
This tracking has been part of Cell phones going back to the old Bell system Air Touch days with Analog phones.
And to end this - Osama Bin Laden has always owned several of my Globalstar Satellite phones and stopped using them for fear of being tracked.

The difference is that now when the police obtains the phone, they can retrieve your location data without having to submit and obtain an official warrant to do so. It's a really big difference.
Same as, for example, you suddenly wanting to spy on someone. All you have to do is hook their phone to the computer for a few minutes, obtain that file, and give it back. No changes made on the phone, no additional software installs required.
So, it is in fact, quite a big deal.

Very real and truly it has been a real pain in ass for me over the years. At UCLA and USC it was a nightmare in English classes.
Worst was the first Engineering drawing class I took where drawings with hidden lines for representation of the 3rd dimension, were near impossible for me to visualize.
On the other hand in my working Engineering Management life with many high sounding and high paying titles; Dyslexia was a Gods Send and set me apart from the others as some sort of Genius.

Unfortunately in the USA and a number of "Other" countries its a fallacy to think Police need a Warrant ANYMORE
USA Homeland security has so many loop holes to do the location tracking without a warrant and all approved by Congress and upheld by Supercourts. You are however correct about the hooking of a phone to a computer, which I have done using blue tooth or or

Recently DM invited someone into his abode. That someone had flash goodies for UBS and one other port connection on DM's computer. So transferring data off of DM's hard drive was child's play. DM is more then well aware of that event. Not as aware of an application left on the computer for later use for retrieval of stuff lol Kids kids how kids play these days eh
So if one were to think about how Cell phones are really computers and many are very much full computers in hand held form, one might just apply such principles to what one might do...Law or not. Log file in Android or not for instance. (from factory that is)
Me thinks based on my personal experience providing spy stuff as "Q" for years to those who play Bond-James Bond for real out there ---When one wants something one gets something - legal or not its a daily occurrence all over Planet Earth and with that I I need my Cardio and my Endorphin rush!!!!!!!!!!!

In most of your posts you seem to refer to the USA being the only country on the world, but you have to think outside of that box as well.
My point is just, it's very bad that if I wanted to find out where someone lives and where they go to every day, and even more, all I have to do is borrow their phone for five minutes and they'd be none the wiser. It's quite puzzling why apple does such a thing, but it's obvious they like to sodomize their users their privacy.

Look at the Clock - If you were to unplug the computer and remove the power supply, would the CPU still keep track of time? If so why?

Sorry I was unaware I have been doing that. Work wise and fun wise I have been just about everywhere. Lived for about 2 years in Australia on and off - Afghanistan for close to one decade. Russian for 1.5 years and France, Netherlands - Sweden and Norway for about one year each. Without exception all of the North African countries, which with my last name, required a name change for many years. Yet I do love my country & Cardiff by the Sea SD, and can understand why I may make it the center of my universe.
Odd that no one so far has mentioned Android! It should be well known that location information is collected "outside" the logs at intervals of less then one second. I need to be somewhat careful on how far I go with the various means of collection and use of that data. (Conflict of interest) but people that know me know I find ways to have my say. Far too many have reasons to contact my clients and actually have LOL - And in meetings we have our laffs about such.

I have no ax's to bear on this subject. I currently own no stock in apple. Could have been part of the founding of that company because a dude named Mike M, was the dude who put Apple together - He and I used to share an office at Hughes Research labs looong ago. Would have been a poor fit for me. So yes at times I have owned the stock (none currently) I admire the company and maybe as much for its wisdom in using UNIX long ago & today as well for O/S. Stored location information was/is always chosen as a benefit for the customer as well as a big benefit for income of "many" So no I do not believe Apple is trying to put its core up anyones a-hole.
I wonder how many here have a clue about Bluetooth as a tool or for that matter the Sync function for cross platform use and how open it may be - How many here think about Wi-Fi as a means to be snooped on? Eavesdropping on GSM phones is Child's play CDMA is a bitch to decode - can be done but damn difficult and that is before any encryption "stuff" GSM will soon end up as LTE which will make it difficult to Eavesdrop.

You need to think like a Nerd for a bit, to think past the box. In the time it takes to open the battery compartment and remove the battery - give me 20 extra seconds and if that battery remains outside the phone, I can guarrrrenteee the phone will work and many do, without a battery. Again just think like a Nerd or even how would a spy solve this simple problem? Again - forget the PC how about removing the battery from a Laptop or note book, does the CPU still keep time and if so why?

CPU doesn't. BIOS does, due to the BIOS battery. Same with phones, but I doubt a single battery is powerful enough to set up a wireless link and maintain it.

You are correct IF one were to use it for too long ----but then again YOU would not use it at all, because it would be YOU removing the battery. Got that? So what does remain alive and lives long and prospers? Depending on GSM or CDMA in any event its a tiny itty bitty blast of energy for Millisecond duration. Can as tested, work for over one full year as a locater - with visible battery removed that is lol. Would last even longer IF one had time to make a minor change to the internal software so that a probe coming in from towers does not register and use up energy by asking for more data which is normally the case. That disable can be done from the tower but NOT on all models of all phones - ALL new yes, that command is C++ child's play and can be done locally, as in a cafe with small purse like container in room. (Sim chip pulled and replaced) Oh my the fun one can have.
Sim programmers were just left all over the place during development of new Cell stuff every fucking place I have consulted at. I could have walked off with many and no one would have noticed- I could have borrowed forever but never had a use for.
