It's so that they can get as much data to sell to third parties as possible. The profit they make from that is a lot more than that of selling Windows.

Almost 2 years for my current computer. I'd used it previously on a flip-screen netbook in 2012 and my friend's media PC when I visited him in 2011. I've also used 95 on a computer I built, 98 on my own first computer and on our family's second computer, 98SE on my grandpa's old computer, XP extensively on 3 desktops and 2 laptops, and Vista on my mom's first laptop and my grandpa's new(er) computer.
I have also used 3.1, but only by chance one time.
