So a couple days ago I'm in the office and a supervisor and manager are discussing training someone to work in the vault. The supervisor suggested training me to do it, but the manager said "No, Joe's too much of a key player. We can't afford to be moving him around." Now I get along with this manager just fine, and I was even flattered to a small degree that he would say that, but at the same time it's almost like saying "Joe's just too good to promote," which kinda pissed me off since I've been looking for opportunities to move up and make more money, but my supervisor won't even give me more hours. So I replied, "Well I don't get paid like I'm a key player."
Well this remark apparently paid off, because yesterday when I was in the office, the supervisor pulled me aside and asked me if I would be interested in training to be a supervisor if the opportunity came up. Before he could even finish his sentence I said "Yes, I would be all over that." It really shouldn't even be a question. Supervisors get paid $1.50 more per hour than the highest paid employee they supervise, which for me would mean going from $13/hour and less than 30 hours per week to a $21/hour full-time position. Time and half on Sundays means I would sometimes be making $31.50 per hour.
Long story short, I'm getting an $8 raise from $13 to $21 and 10+ more hours per week to go with it, and I'll finally be able to achieve some financial independence. This is gonna be fucking awesome.

That is really cool. One thing I don't understand though is that I was being paid $30/h base rate as an apprentice. Is the cost of living radically different between Australia and USA?

I guess it has to do with cost of living and just having a really well-paying job. The economy for fresh blood is so bad over here that I know people with masters degrees who are busing tables and other college grads who are lucky to even get internships that pay $8/hour.
Sounds like I need to move to Australia and work there for a while and move the money back to the states.
