Topic: I tried to spend a good portion of April as Anonymous. I really did.
Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 started this discussion 15 years ago#4,817
I couldn't do it though. What I realized throughout the experience is how much people with names, and therefore, a reputation, are treated differently. It made me realize that people here respect me. You might laugh at that last statement, but the fact of the matter is, you might disagree with me, you might make fun of me, you might get frustrated with me, you might think my posts are "tl;dr," and you might not even like me at all, and I'm cool with that, but you do respect me, even if you don't realize it, and it's apparent in how you treat anonymous posters differently from the "namefags." The same goes true for pretty much everyone here who uses a name, depending on their reputation.
As Anonymous, people responded to me so much differently that it started to get on my nerves. When I'm "Broseph" I will compose myself in such a way that I interact with people the same way I might in real life, because there's the whole reputation thing. Since I was forcing myself to be anonymous, and I was getting kind of pissed off, I pretty much stopped caring and would just post whatever. This has its advantages, as the whole point of posting anonymously is to not have to worry about reputation and anger going from thread to thread. We've discussed this before. However, I find that it tends to go into a downward spiral. It upsets the normal social order that humans usually have when interacting with each other (which can also be a good thing), and the more blunt and disrespectful people are, the more bluntly and disrespectfully they are treated in return. We can go back and forth between posting under our names and posting anonymously, depending on what we want to post, but you're still replacing what could have been a more acceptable post, a post that could build your reputation, a post like might be interpreted differently because of your reputation, with a post that's diluted with the aforementioned attitudes. Even a poster you hate, like to4ster or DM, has your respect. If these people just constantly trolled anonymously, you'd never know it, but these people are always being discussed here because you love to hate them. You develop memes and cliches around them, and that's a sign of respect. No matter how much shtick an anonymous poster has, without a name, they're never the topic of discussion. You never read posts that are like "Yeah that one anonymous poster who always says so and so..." because they don't get your respect like posters with names do.
It's kind of like the social experiments where if you put someone in a suit or costume, they have a tendency to play the role that the outfit represents. People in suits tend to act more professional, people outfitted as guards or police officers tend to exercise more authority, and mascots who puts on suits tend to act very silly, etc.
This board is still what some call "semi-anonymous" though, because everyone knows who everyone is in each thread, and everyone knows who the namefags are, but no one really knows who the namefags really are. In a sense, everyone gets to create their own costume, put it on, and allow themselves to fall into the role they've given themselves. It's anonymous in the sense that you're wearing mask, but everyone can be identified by the anonymous role they take on (if you give yourself a name.) Take off the mask and you lose the persona. You're no longer role-playing. Nickalollyoff is a perfect example of this. He can be a complete shitposter here, but still be a serious mod on TinyChan, and a normal guy on Facebook. I don't like most of Nick's posts here, but I have to respect Nick for sticking to what he does. An anonymous habitual shitposter would be banned in a day, but people like Nick are allowed to stay because we respect the role he has taken on.
So, in short, namefagging has very little to do with being an attention whore who needs to feel special, and has a lot to do with taking on the persona that you can't necessarily take on in real life, and being treated in a way that one would expect that persona to be treated. I think that's what I've learned from my Anonymous April experience.
Today's escape will consist of a mask I found it in a bargain bin Why do you ask? Rosy cheeks and a smile There's no shame in my game of denial

Interesting! You are right. I do respect you and always read your tl;dr posts.
I tried going namefagging but I always felt uncomfortable with doing so. I also have more than one persona so combining them into 1 would never work. It's comfortable to post anonymously once you're used to it.

I meant if they only trolled anonymously from the start. They only became identifiable after spending a lot of time posting under their names. If DM had always posted as anonymous, I doubt anyone here would have been like "Oh god, it's that guy who's always talking about farts again." And even if something like that did happen, it might never occur to you that the guy who always posts shoops of Gunlog, the guy who always says words like "fora", the guy who talks about farts, the guy who talks about being french, etc., were in fact all the same person. His "shtick" is made of several parts that can really only be identified as "shtick" when unified under one name. Plus, you only assume that he's easy to identify. You have no way of knowing how many anonymous posts were his and you didn't know it. You only see the shtick-filled posts and assume you've caught them all.

I never said mods had no way of knowing. In fact, I pointed out that you're probably more likely to get banned posting anonymously, because you're respected less, even if the mods don't realize it. Mods can still ban someone who's posting anonymously without realizing they banned a namefag, if they're not looking closely (though I'm sure they usually do before handing out any serious bans), and if they do realize it's a namefag posting anonymously, it's only because of ID's and IP addresses. To anyone who's not a mod/admin, everything I said still stands.
And again, mountainman still had to post under his name for his shtick to be recognizable as the sum of its parts. Everything I said still stands. There is rarely such thing as anonymous shtick. It has to be unified under a name first. That's why we never talk about "that guy who does so and so." We always talk about the shtick of people with names.

Well you're still getting recognition, even if it's not good recognition, and people will start to respect you as you post with your name more. Not everyone is going to like you, but they will respect you. You and I got off to a bad start, but I already respect you more than most anonymous posters. I actually had more accusations thrown at me when I was posting anonymously. I guess it's not for everyone. If you post with a name but still post like you're anonymous, then I can see how that might cause problems. It goes back to what I said about how a name is like a mask that causes you to follow a certain persona. If you're not the type of person to do this, then a name is probably not for you.

Anonymous C replied with this 15 years ago, 13 minutes later, 19 hours after the original post[^][v]#85,925
Hm. I gave it some thought, and basically here is my take on the matter:
Posting as anonymous distances your comments from yourself. It provides a more raw and unfiltered experience to certain threads, and it's there for a good reason. The problem with namefagging in general is that causes people to focus less on what is being said, but more on WHO is saying it. The content goes regulated and just because you couldn't take the pressure of people calling you names or saying things in a disagreeable manner to you, Broseph, doesn't mean posting as anonymous is a bad thing. You want to hold somebody accountable, and that hazards the problem of people holding bias. Bias towards certain posters and prejudice towards others. Most people are incapable of absolute forgiveness or redemption towards posters, and obviously that comes with a certain degree of empathy and caution, which I don't think most people here honestly have. Using to4str as an example, if he completely posted quality topics under his handle (that weren't related to jacking off men or pedophilia), I doubt many people would take him seriously. I doubt he'd be shown much respect in that regard. Not everyone backs themselves into a corner like this, though, but some people don't need others pressuring bias to namefags who post in other threads. You're not a very good example of the demographics of MC anyway, Broseph, so I don't really expect you to understand why it's that way.

I do understand what you're saying, but I think it can go either way. I think I made some of your same points in my original post, I just stated them a little differently. I agree that posting as completely anonymous distances the posts from the poster and makes the content more raw. Sometimes this is a good thing, and sometimes it's not. Sometimes the persona and reputation of a poster does contribute to the conversation. You're right that sometimes there's more focus on the poster compared to anonymous posts, but again, this is not always a bad thing, as long as the focus is more on the post than the poster. People have certain reputations and certain expectations for a reason. Keep in mind what I said about names being like a masks that carry a persona. Even when posting with a name, there is some distance between the posts and the poster, just not as much distance as there is when posting completely anonymously. You can still post things here and talk about things here that you otherwise might not in real life. It's not as raw as it is when you're anonymous, but any rules you follow when posting under a name that make it less raw are the rules you make for yourself. Like I said, when we post under name we are posting under a persona rather than no persona at all, but it's still not our IRL persona. You get to give yourself whatever persona you want. You could do this as anon, but chances are no one will recognize the persona (see the posts where I talked about "shtick" being unified under name), and it's also harder to make yourself follow the rules that you set for yourself. I'm not saying that people need to be held accountable for their posts. I'm saying that people who post under a name tend to hold themselves accountable, even when they don't even realize that they're setting rules for themselves and following them. Just like I'm not saying posting anonymously is bad, I'm not saying that this is always a good thing, especially when people aren't aware of the rules they're setting for themselves and might be holding back more than they should. Once you're aware of it though, you can use this psychological trick to give yourself the persona you want, rather than no persona at all or your real persona. You create your own mask.

It depends on what name it would be posted under, but probably not. If someone like Nick had posted that, I would have been shocked to see such a serious post, but under any non-shitposting name, no, I would not have interpreted your post differently.
Had you posted under a name though, that post would have contributed to the persona you have under that name. Even if I didn't disagree with you, or even if your post pissed me off, I would still respect you for it because you're not afraid to attach your posts to a name. Even if I respect an anonymous post, I can't build respect for an anonymous poster, because I have no way of tying together all their posts under a name.
(Edited 1 minute later.)
Anonymous C replied with this 15 years ago, 13 minutes later, 23 hours after the original post[^][v]#86,095
Therein lies the problem: expectation. When something is posted under a name, there is a certain expectation of what quality the person posts. It's a really dynamic issue; you could have a conflicting opinion of a namefag who shitposts at times and posts quality. Take Ninjj, who can act seriously in some threads and non-serious in others. We've seen in the past that because of his dualistic behaviour that he has been dogged before in several threads by buspuppie for his shitposts even though he's known to speak seriously in other threads. Who wants that? I don't want the hassle of people always holding me to some kind of standard, and that's the advantage of being anonymous. It's not fun for me to always be expected to post quality, and while I used to have an extremely high standard of quality for seriousness on the board, I remembered that it's still just a chan, even by a different software, and taking myself too seriously was disadvantageous. Things don't need to be so extremely high maintenance around here anyway. Maybe that's where you and I differ.
Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 (OP) replied with this 15 years ago, 22 minutes later, 23 hours after the original post[^][v]#86,123
@previous (C)
You can always post anonymously when you don't want to be held to a standard, and keep in mind that when you post under a name you determine what standards you're held to, not others. I would have been surprised if someone like Nick posted something serious, but I would not have held it against him. And I know that posters like Ninjj can be serious still be crazy at times. I don't set expectations for certain posters, I just have the expectations they want me to have. The respect thing isn't just for those who meet my expectations, it's simply for anyone who has a persona.
I didn't realize this because I realized I respect them. I realized this because when I posted anonymously, even if I didn't post much differently, I was treated differently and clearly didn't feel as respected. Even people who disagree with me or just want to troll me, reply to me in a certain way when they reply to Broseph. You would think that posting as anonymous would mean less drama for the reasons you mentioned, but for me, it actually caused more. I actually felt like I was held to a higher standard when posting as anonymous. When posting under a name, you set the standard and let people know what to expect, and people respect you for it. That's why anonymous shitposters get banned and namefag shitposters get laughed at.

The difference is that I don't demand respect. I don't need it in order to justify my opinions. I don't need people to reinforce my truths. I don't want people to just agree with me because I've built a respect around my namefag. I want people to read what I say without a pre-formed opinion of me. My namefag shouldn't matter in this regard. If you listen more to what namefags say than anonymous posters then you're being biased.
Broseph !!fxnDb+Ve4 (OP) replied with this 15 years ago, 35 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^][v]#86,161
@previous (C)
I'm not demanding respect. I'm just making the observation that I can tell I'm respected more when I post under my name. Nor am I arguing for higher quality posts or arguing that posting with a name is always better. I'm just making observations. I never said that people agree with me more when I post under my name. I specifically said that even those who disagree with me or don't like me still show more respect. I can understand that you don't want people to judge your posts with pre-formed opinions. I don't either, and that's actually why I post with a name. I feel like when I post anonymously, people will more readily reply to my posts with shit. I feel like people judge my posts less when I post with my name. I don't listen to namefags more than anonymous posters. Like I said, there are anonymous posts that I respect, but I can't tie that respect to an anonymous poster. Yes, some people are going to be biased in favor of namefags, and some people are going to be biased in favor of anonymous posts, but we can't really control our biases. It's not that people choose to be more respectful or pay closer attention to posts with names. They probably just do it without even realizing it. People usually don't choose to be biased. I'm not saying this is a good thing, I'm just observing that this is how it is.
The whole bias and subconscious decision thing is one of the reasons I made this thread. I'm trying to make people aware of their biases and aware of the decisions they make. That's why I pointed out in a previous post that most people who post under a name set rules for themselves when using that name without even realizing it. Once you're aware of it, you can control it and use it to your advantage.

Even if no one takes the advice, I'm just explaining the observations I made this month, and what I learned.
You can apply this same concept to real life. Like the social experiments I mentioned earlier where people outfitted as guards act like they have authority, and people dressed in suits act more professional. If you're aware of it, you have more control of it. It's the same with posture, body language, and things like that. You have to learn to control your persona, especially when it comes to things like job interviews, first impressions, sales tactics, picking up women, or whatever. You have to learn to role play to some degree.
