also no i was shocked and appalled to discover the other day when i ran an antivirus scan for the first time that this laptop i have had for a year+ and have used irresponsibly is completely malwarefree

you might need to use regedit and get rid of some registry keys. if it's a particularly bad one then it's not as straight forward as just antimalware. it would be easier to help if you can tell us what malware you're dealing with or at least what the major symptoms are. i'd guess you first got your browser permanently redirected and then had any existing antimalware broken, correct? so you're basically locked out of doing everything? (task manager is dead, etc.) is that right?
oh man, if that's what's happening you're fucked. no, not really. but it might be a major headache to actually diagnose and remove. is a reinstallation out of the question? i only ask because it sounds like you can't restore.
