Someone at my work is absolutely convinced it is good for his batteries to let them drain to about 5%, and refuses to charge anything before they're (almost) dead. He will take the power cable out of his laptop when it has reached 100%.

old school. back in the day you'd ruin batteries charging them early or over charging. you can still over charge them in some instances but newer batteries don't have as bad a "memory issue" and you can randomly charge it.
but if you ever ruined an expensive battery by charging it at 50% then you get in the habit of letting devices turn off before charging

I know, but this kid is younger than I am, probably 16. Maybe 17. Chances are he never seriously used batteries that really had issues with all this.
