i didn't know this, but apparently they just released the pilot for free on a bunch of places including youtube. for those that don't know it's a highly anticipated space opera on syfy channel. the trailers make it look like Battlestar Galactica quality special effects and the story is based on a pretty excellent book series.

alright, i'm going to be fucking pissed if syfy end up cancelling this fucker. there's some speculation that the low rating it's gotten for the last few episodes are going to lead to the pre-approved season 2 to get cut down or cancelled altogether. but syfy has completely and totally royally fucked the launch of this show. they aired the first episode on the web a month before it was supposed to air, so everyone who wanted to watch it already did. then they did the same thing for the second episode (release it early) and someone fucked up and release the first 4 fucking episodes and everyone binged watched the shit. it's excellent, but the rating are horrible because there is no reason for anyone to have been tuning in. for a channel that relies heavily on rating to determine scheduling it's a pretty massive fuckup to pursue an all-or-nothing exposure campaign.

hopefully the speculation is wrong and syfy did forsake ratings for massive exposure and hope to hedge that into a big hit for advertisers on down the road. either way it doesn't matter, as fans there's only one thing we can do. if you can tune in, do it. if you can't, DVR it. i bought the first season on amazon, which means i'm a worthless sack of shit because i don't contribute to viewership numbers. but, i can't/won't subscribe to cable, so, all i can really do is try and spread the word.

so, if you like the show and want to see it continue you can help by tuning in next tuesday 10/9c

it's come to my attention that some users of this board still haven't heard about this awesome fucking show. season 1 just finished the finale and season 2 is in production to be release later this year. if you like science fiction, space, or just cool TV give it a view. the fist 4 episodes are almost a little miniseries in and of themselves, and the plot has a good pacing and there are big plot points that get resolved or introduced frequently. the story follows many characters and and has nice A and B arcs (and even a C arc) and everything ties up neatly.

the guys who wrote the series of books the show is based on worked with G.R.R.M on a Song of Ice and Fire as proofreaders or editors or something. the books are great (and not nearly as dense as ASOIAF) because what it lacks in super granular detail and hundreds of characters and dozens of arcs it makes up for with a focus on removing the fiction from sci-fi. kinda like how game of thrones is a "fantasy story without the magic" - at least that's the way it was pitched by HBO in the run up to season 1 - and the Expanse does the same thing, realistic physics apply and space travel is dominated by acceleration, g-forces, time, and lack of resources. instead of fantasy ships that warp around and have inertial dampeners and instant travel and replicators, the ships in the expanse are still rockets trading mass for acceleration, they just happen to be super efficient. travel takes time, g-forces can kill, and zero gravity/low gravity effects everything. it's a great read, and the show is very cool too.

check it out on the syfy network, amazon and probably the others idk. not netflicks yet, but eventually. pirate it if nothing else, it's entertaining.
