Topic: I'm drinking wine I made in my bedroom closet from Welch's grape juice and baking yeast.

Metæ? started this discussion 11 years ago #47,829

My god, it's disgusting. It tastes like drinking grape juice after brushing your teeth. The reason for this is because your humble narrator didn't add enough sugar and the yeast have consumed literally all the sugar in the grape juice, leaving the tartness and grapey-ness but with absolutely not a scintilla of sweetness.

It is drier than the Atacama desert, and burns slightly. People on homebrew forums say "hurr baking yeast will make CO2 but not ethanol" but they're dumbshit retards who don't know how yeast metabolism works. This has to be at least 12% abv. For $3 a gallon. I mean that's cheaper than gas was last year.

It may not be very good, but it's my wine and somehow (like the desk I built out of plywood scraps and 2x4s) makes it all worth it.

Oh right, I'll just go buy prepackaged, industrially made, flawlessly consistent wine like you, a typical USAmerican

Right so you drink Moet et Chandon instead of Korbel. Still prepackaged, instrially made, flawlessly consistent, off the shelf you can drop in your shopping cart and swipe a credit card for atthe checkout.

I'm fairly sure this is how all new world wine is made.

gas is about $1.75 a gallon here now..

once while a teen I developed an uncommon heart ailment called pericarditis after drinking some tasty home made blackberry wine a friends mom had made and gobbling dexidrine over the course of a few days...probably coincidence though..

wine sure does not have to be expensive to be good...I think wine snobs drink crap wine just because it is high priced and think they look sophisticated drinking it...fuck that..

Have you tried the yeast made specifically for wine making?

That's pretty cool, @OP, even if it didn't taste the greatest.

You can't be an expert homebrew expert on your first go. You do need a log book though, because when you've done it 20 times exact measures and timings are hard to remember. Especially if it's weeks or a month between brews.

I am sure you must have considered this butttt - How about adding something to sweeten it up a bit.
I think Green might suggest Fig Juice. (seed free of course)

Night 2, I have no idea how much (in terms of ethanol) I've drunk, since I don't have the instruments to measure the alcohol content of my homemade wine but I'm four pints in and feeling decently buzzed! This is a lifetime first for me (last night was assisted by Everclear and Pepsi). This is lifetime first, getting inebriated off my own wine.

Note to self: buy 5 gallon food grade plastic bucket from Lowe's, and proper wine making yeast.
