you mean a creative person resents criticism? shocker. i kinda figured that Star Wars was over when the prequels got such a luke-warm reception and i figured it was for the better. if he can't see the difference between the original trilogy and the prequels then he's lost more than his edge, he's lost his objectivity. i could go on, but the point is lucas is wrong when he blames the fans for not liking the prequels. he needs to take a good long look in the mirror and recognize he's not the same director he was in the 70s. and all the tech in the world can't save bad story telling. it can still be campy and fantastical and grand and even mundane, but if it's bad then no amount of CG is going to save it. and i'm sorry, han shot first, and until he's willing to admit that and write a story with that same edge then it's not going to ever flesh with the original trilogy.
in fact i'd argue that he had a terrible time even making good Anakin become evil Vader. he absolutely fucked up the origin story AND at the same time delivered the most disturbing and out of place scene in all 6 movies when he had anakin kill a bunch of kids... because his mom died... it's fucking stupid. and it's absolutely way too sudden. Vader's weakness was always ambition and pride and the prequels hardly address those major aspects of vader excpet to make anakin kinda Emo about not being taken super serial. he was always whining about shit. he should have been written as prideful and arrogant and ambitious and we should have seen the evil behind the mask shine through throughout the character development. instead of writing a character that develops as a bad dude, he decides to write a good-guy-forced-to-be-bad and then makes his motivation emo pain and waits till the last episode to even explore the idea.
how about a fucking non beta as fuck alpha character who seduces natalie protman and fucks her brains out and knocks her up because he's invincible and everyone needs to get the fuck out of his way because he'll fuck your world up when no one is looking. make him brash and disobedient and force the jedi to be the ones to cope with this super powerful who must be a jedi otherwise everyone is fucked. you know? that should've been their motivation behind keeping him, he's too dangerous not to make a jedi.
but, no, lucas can't write heroic bad guys anymore. it's unfortunate too, because the vader story arc could've been the best of the entire franchise. but it's no, it's bad and it's lame and it's unbelievable and it's long and it's boring for the most part when it wasn't actually annoying.
also, midichloreans. way to ruin the fantastical mysticism of the Force

and a smuggler. and he's actually ex-imperial army. he used to work for the empire, doing their dirty work, but then when he was asked to kill chewbacca he refused and instead helped him escape. chewie owes han a life debt as is the wookie way and so he follows han to protect him and eventually they became close friends after saving each others lives multiple times since they are both wanted as criminals and run from the law. han is a very relateable character and has many redeeming qualities (such as loyalty) that endeer him to the viewer despite the fact that he's a killer and a smuggler who seemingly only cares for reward. you can tell pretty quickly (although after his introduction as a lawless killer) that he's actually a good person underneath the bravado.

yes, it would've been awesome if lucas had drawn from that lore for vader. oh yeah, but disney announced that they are doing star wars forever now. so it's likely someone somewhen will end up doing a starkiller movie
