This is in every alcohol ad. But what is responsible drinking? Okay, sure designated driver, dont operate heavy machinery, etc but is getting drunk - at all - responsible? Do responsible people call it a night after their second Bud Lite™? Is it responsible to harass some poor guy in New Zealand after half a box of Franzia at 5 in the morning provided you don't drive??
But if you ever watch alcohol commercials everyone appears sober. And the ads, they're always coy about what alcohol actually does. Just like cigarette ads. Marlboro red promises "full flavor" but everyone knows that's really "full nicotine" so why not just say so? You never hear "gets you more shitfaced for less money" or "less unpleasant than Listerine" in alcohol ads but just sort of vague allusions to parties and laughing.

Check with becky. That line is CYA speak to protect the company. Betting its the result of several court cases where someone blamed the booze company for getting drunk. Same for casino gambling etc

"Drink responsibly" means don't do dumb shit like drive, get in fights, poop on the kitchen floor, get alcohol poisoning, threaten to burn your neighbor's house down, or anything else reckless or dangerous as a result of being inebriated.

To be fair, that was a decent observation that added a new point to the thread.
@OP > but is getting drunk - at all - responsible?
I suppose the message, vague as it is, is not to do anything too stupid or dangerous whilst drunk. Or maybe also not to drink so much that it causes health problems.

"The contradiction between appearing to promote responsible drinking and the actual use of 'drink responsibly' messages to reinforce product promotion suggests that these messages can be deceptive and misleading,"
In 2014, Americans paid more than $135 billion for alcoholic beverages. Apparently its not like Tobacco re law demands. The Drink Responsible because a quick skim says only 85% of ads contain the ambiguous statement.

Disingenuous of Anon C - considering how Anon C asks for more on Topic elements. I can even decode that you dream of your tongue up me where the sun no shine.
I think this says it all so unless some other MC user replies in thread I have nada more to say to Anon C cause of his unhealthy fixation on my anus.
'Drink responsibly' messages in alcohol ads promote products, not public health
Summary:
Alcohol industry magazine ads reminding consumers to “drink responsibly” or “enjoy in moderation” fail to convey basic public health information, according to a new study. Federal regulations do not require "responsibility" statements in alcohol advertising, and while the alcohol industry's voluntary codes for marketing and promotion emphasize responsibility, they provide no definition for "responsible drinking."

Some people simply can't learn to Enjoy Alcohol Responsibly™ -- I genuinely think some people have personalities that are just really ill-suited to any mind-altering substance, whether it's alcohol or codeine or weed or whatever else.
Especially you soft Yank bastards. ?

Do alcohol ads in the UK include something about "please drink responsibly" or "please enjoy responsibly" or something to that effect? All alcohol ads here do. It's not, as far as I know, a legal requirement but it is weird that you're supposed to drink "responsibly" but there is no actual definition of that ?
