Topic: Can you be offended on someone elses behalf?

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #47,546

I don't think that is a real thing. Imaginary offended empathy or something? You are not actually offended, but you have been offended by some other thing and know how it feels so you get offended by proxy.

It's not the same. You can be outraged, and demand someone think of the children, but you can not actually be offended on someones behalf.

Sure you can. It's no different from being embarrassed on someone else's behalf.

There is a difference between being embarrassed, and feeling embarrassed by others though. If you are embarrassed someone might feel pity for you, maybe they'll more likely laugh. But if you are embarrassed on someones behalf no one gives a fuck how you feel, it wasn't you.

Interesting point, but you choose to be offended, whereas embarrassment is involuntary.

No, I'm not just talking about feeling pity for someone who is embarrassed. I'm talking about empathy as a real psychological phenomenon. For example, over-hearing a couple breaking up at a restaurant. It's such an awkward situation that even you start to feel embarrassed even though you have nothing to feel embarrassed about. It's also what happens during cringe-comedy. We may laugh at it, but sometimes it's just hard to watch. I don't know about you, but sometimes I find cringe-comedy too difficult to watch, probably because I have strong empathy. Though if you're autistic, I suppose this sort of empathy may be difficult to grasp, and you might just awkwardly laugh at awkward situations.

@623,301 (C)
I do not think being offended is voluntary though. I think a lot of SJWs may choose to get themselves riled up over nothing, or things that don't affect them, but people who are truly offended cannot just choose to not be a offended. A black person being offended by hurtful, racist comments. They can't just choose for it to not strike a nerve. If you have normal empathy, and you see this taking place, you can feel offended from seeing another human being being treated badly.

It's not the same though. White people being offended by racist comments directed towards black people, is not the same as black people actually being offended by those comments. That's just "think about the children" and outrage to prove how progressive they are or something. I think if you don't know those feels, you can't possibly be offended by them.

It's like an atheist getting offended when someone insults Jesus. They have no faith, no knowledge of what religion actually means to people, how it changed their lives, or anything. I simply don't believe that they can be offended by it on someone elses behalf. A little pissed of, upset, perturbed, mad, etc yes. But only because they generally feel that way about any offensive things.

Using racism as the example again, white people can only feel offended by racist remarks towards black people, at the same level as when they hear other swearwords or curse words spoken to someone. They can't be offended on behalf of black people.

Wait, seeing someone get kicked in the balls and feeling a slight unease is not the same as actually getting kicked in the balls. Your slight unease should be generally disregarded

Why don't you try a social experiment? Walk up to a group of black males, choose one at random, and call him a n*gger to his face. If the others aren't offended on his behalf, you've made your point. If they beat you to your knees and kick the shit out of you...well, I guess your assumption is wrong.

Let us know how it turns out.

Just throwing in a group scenario misses the point. Lots of people made fools of on a stage can feel embarrassed, and for each other. The people in the audience are the ones I'm talking about. White people vs black racism. Atheist vs religious blasphemy.

Do you understand how this discussion works?

Anonymous F replied with this 11 years ago, 39 minutes later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #623,372

I understand perfectly. Here's your original post:

> Can you be offended on someone else's behalf? I don't think that is a real thing. Imaginary offended empathy or something? You are not actually offended, but you have been offended by some other thing and know how it feels so you get offended by proxy.

Originally, you said nothing about "audiences", racism, blasphemy or SJWs. You amended your initial statement in later posts when you weren't getting the responses you wanted.

Try another experiment. Go out and find a happily married woman in her 50s. Offer her an unprovoked and undeserved insult: call her a whore to her face in front of her husband and offspring. Make sure to record their reaction on your cell phone, then report back to us. I for one am very curious to see if they wouldn't take offense on her behalf.

You are talking about being offended by offensive behavior. And I didn't amend my initial statement I had a discussion and expanded in more detail. You claim I amend my statement but fail to read the whole statement, which addresses your invalid point anyway.

Also, please to try and remain calm while posting, this is a hypothetical situation and you seem upset. Thanks

I've explained both of those situations. Reread the thread, and try working on your reading comprehension.

And as this is a hypothetical situation, I'll accept them hypothetically. They went as I expected, and I come to the same conclusions. So unless you have anything to add to the discussion, that'll be all. Thanks

If it's hypothetical, then the issue is completely open to interpretation. Evidently, you wouldn't take offense if someone called your mother a whore. Speaking for myself, however, I would take great offense if anyone insulted my mother, both on her behalf and my own.

OP's basically attacking SJWs for their shallow motivations and counterfeit empathy. Vocalon would never question the SJW agenda, no matter how much it reeks of white privilege.

You are not being called a whore. I assume you aren't a whore, and have no whoring knowledge. I assume you aren't a female and I also assume that calling you a whore holds the same weight as calling you a wetback if you aren't a Mexican immigrant. Basically no real offense can be taken if you are Japanese and are called a Kike. So you can not feel offended on your mothers behalf by her being called a whore.

You can, however, be offended by offensive language in general, the same way everyone is. That is not the same thing. That is my point that you are trying your best to ignore.

If you are not black you cannot feel the same way as a black man does when he is called a nigger, just because you overheard it and think it is offensive to black people to be called niggers.

I'm running out of ways to explain this to you that hasn't already been covered. Look at this post @623,312 (kook !!Phkn/3Gic) that is what you feel when your mother is called a whore. It's not the same as the actual feeling of being kicked in the balls. In this metaphor your mother being called a whore is actually being kicked in the balls. You, on the other hand, are only watching and wincing and claiming that it is the same feeling.

Can you be offended by someone calling your mother a whore? Sure you can, that sounds offensive to people. You can be offended if anyone is called a whore if you really want. But you are on the outside looking in. You do not feel the same. You can't be offended on their behalf.
