also i gotta say i'm glad the crafting is not grindy. the whole "build a base" thing is kinda cool. sure, you can't craft plasma rifles out of the gate, but you can jump right into the building/trading/attracting npcs. kinda neat. bet it gets involved though.

pretty much. i got kinda interested in the crafting after all. there's only a few resources that prevent op stuff too early. everything is easy to gather too. just flag the resources you need and it highlights it in the environment kinda.

but also the settlement building is fun too. kinda like the Vault game app thing. recruit people and defend against raids. so i'm not really powering through the main story line at all.

I read a review, I think it was on ars technica, that said the game needs 30 hours or so before it gets good. I think they mean grinding levels and powerups.

What is your character build so far? Did you just go all out strength?

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #622,470

@previous (G)
no. all agility and the rest split into luck and endurance or something. kinda random but stealth focused. got a top agi perk and a stealth perk, then lockpicking. about to get weapon upgrade perk from intel and am pretty much just getting perks now.

obviously just sneaking sniping and ambushing. getting endurance gear and staying drunk when i need to carry more. frequent junk dropoffs for sure though. adding pockets is nice.

Sounds like lockpicking is more useful than I'd like. How many things are you unable to lockpick at the moment, like are you 50/50 for things you try or find, and are you going to max out the skill?

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #622,678

there's a quick save and you can set autosave every 5 minutes. so far it's only a mild annoyance. not like the MGS5 Quiet bug that corrupted saves.

lots of expert safes aroud i can't pick and some doors. usually it gets me a rad-x and a stimpak. got one .308 bolt-action and for sure 1 fusion taken from a machine in a basement from lockpicking. the suits are just laying around.

This game... Is pretty bloody awesome, mates.

My favourite thing has to the power armour. I'vr got my character geared towards melee combat, and I've got the 10 strength perk that lets you damage enemies by charging into them with your power armour. I love fighting enemies by just charging at them and slicing them all up with my sword.

Also, got my character a nice tuxedo and a pair of shades. Always nice to have a stylish character.

@622,582 (squeegee)
Oh yeah, they're more fun this time around. The tunneling was a good way to make them into more credible threats. Radscorpions do it too, which is great.

quick saved and killed her. she fought back and the settlers finished her off. dropped a gun, ammo and a jacket. not her whole store, but one can only hope.
then i killed that annoying guy in the t-shirt and everyone flipped their shit. not only did they all attack me (including codsworth the fucking traitor) but they actually got in the power armor and used it against me. and so there i was without my minigun trying to kill sturges and wearing charisma clothes when some random no-name kills me with a board with nails in it.

@previous (RWBY Rhubarb? !!iNo3FkiZx)
you have a sword? where'd you get a sword? and that sounds awesome. do you run low on fusion cores and all that? seems like every time i use a suit the power looks like it would drain quickly with extended use. how long in real time do those things last before you need a fresh core?

edit: oh yeah, and i'm enjoying it a lot too. fun enough the occasional glitches aren't bothering me. i've already played this more than metal gear 5 and i've had that for weeks and weeks.

(Edited 1 minute later.)

RWBY Rhubarb? !!iNo3FkiZx replied with this 11 years ago, 19 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #622,883

I wish I'd given my character more points in intelligence from the get-go. Getting the science crafting perk is essential for really upgrading the power armour. It's nothing a a few levels won't fix, but still.

Also, the NPCs in this are bloody badass. It takes bravery to go up against somebody in full power armour with just your fists (and even block a few sword swings with their bare hands, somehow).

@previous (squeegee)
> you have a sword? where'd you get a sword?
Purchased it from a ruined diner place that was being hassled by raiders. Forget the name, but it's somewhere south-east of Sanctuary. Though the sword might have been a random appearence.

> do you run low on fusion cores and all that?
I ran out once, early in the game. But after some exploration I have like 12 cores (mostly looted because they're expensive as fuck to buy). Now I pretty much wear my power armour all the time when not in settlements.

> how long in real time do those things last before you need a fresh core?
Don't know, exactly. Seems like a reasonable amount, to me. But it's best to have multiple cores on hand.

RWBY Rhubarb? !!iNo3FkiZx double-posted this 11 years ago, 3 minutes later, 2 days after the original post[^] [v] #622,884

Also, I don't like the striped tie on the black suit. I spent hours searching around for a nice suit and then find it's got a shit tie. I hope a mod is made to fix this.

Don't get me wrong,a tuxedo is still very fancy, but it just doesn't have the professionalism of a good suit and tie. :(

i don't want to over sell it, but i think you'll dig it since you liked bioshock and like rpgs.

and i'm kinda surprised how much fun i'm having just mucking about with my settlement. like, it's kinda exactly how i wish games like minecraft and rust and h1z1 or day z would do it.

i understand they are fundamentally different games, but fallout is doing it right.

it could be more robust, but this is their first pass as settlement building and it meshes perfectly with crafting and all the junk everywhere. all the shit is something now.

tea pot: steel
lightbulb: glass

it's kinda great. yes the settlement building is kinda tacked on to the story, like why does this protagonist want to build a society when they have more pressing matters... but the mechanics are all linked in some way even if it's tacked on, it's deeply integrated. i can see this as being something to expand on, it's fun.

i was pretty iffy at first and figured it was just another case of take feature from popular game x and shoe-horn it in, and it may be exactly that, but i think it works. bethesda has thrown a lot of time, money and talent at the whole "survival/crafting/building" trendyness, and i think they nailed it in their non-mmo format.

and even if you don't like that kind of stuff you can skip the whole settlement and crafting stuff and just play the mission/faction/story game exclusively.

I wonder what the story with the Supermutants is? They seem to be East Coast super mutants, like the ones in Fallout 3. But, last time we saw them, they were running low on FEV to make more of themselves and were also being successfully weeded out by the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood. Yet they seem to be in the Commonwealth in force. So either it's a seperate group entirely, or the East Coast super mutants got their act together.

It's also interesting how these ones seem to be mutant supremacists. In FO3 they were pretty much went "RARGH SMASH YOU", but now they're also yelling things along the lines of huamnity being an inferior race.

Hope there's some lore to them, later on. It'd be a slight letdown if they weren't really explained.

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 48 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #623,043

my character may be suffering from PTSD. just think about how the story starts. you're just chilling in your home, living your life, when you suddenly survive a nuclear apocalypse. but not only that, but within moments of the bombs exploding you're frozen. you only wake up for a minute to witness your child being stolen and your partner murdered. then you wake up again (and remember, from your perspective not 10 minutes ago you were eating breakfast and dressing with your spouse) and quickly make it to the surface, back home, and are already venturing out to look for help. maybe, maybe something like 3 hours have passed for you since your entire world crumbles before your very eyes and here you are more than happy to jump in a suit of power armor and murder raiders and slaughter a giant terrifying creature you've never even heard of before. my characters willingness to accept at face value the world as it has changed is truly inspiring.

i realized while my character was sitting on a couch around a camp fire in the middle of a shanty town ordering people to take up guard posts and farm under the watchfull eyes of autoturrets while wearing a sea captain's hat, trendy sunglasses, a sequin purple party dress and toting a sawed off shotgun while a gamma-ray storm surges overhead that my character is a fucking bad ass.

thrive, pretty little party princess, you were born to live in this world. with an iron fist of power armor.

I recently spent like £1.3k building a new PC, which plays Fallout 4 as well as my crappy old laptop could play Fallout NV with super-low settings (no grass, most animations disabled, etc.). What companions are you guys using, if any? My favourites so far are Piper and Cait.

I feel like the companions in this game are a huge leap forward, for Bethesda's open world game followers. Even in Skyrim, followers were all fairly one-dimensional outside of some unique dialogue whilst exploring. But here, companions are fleshed out, have lots of unique dialogue, and even have relationship meters and actual conversations with you. Bethesda has learned from New Vegas (and other modern RPGs in general probably) and the result is really good.

Be sure to get some defenses too, of course. Then after some (IRL, not in-game, so waiting doesn't help) time has passed you'll find 100s of purified water in your workbench. They heal like 40hp each, and sell for a pretty penny too. I like selling them to the gun dealer for fusion cores.

You just had to turn it into an organic vegan water farming and recycling simulator, didn't you?

Even better (or is it?), you can also grow three plants (I forgot which, check your workbench under vegetable starch), harvest all of those and craft vegetable starch from those plants and 1 purified water. Infinite adhesive, which was in short supply for me before figuring this out.

I dont murder them and they get a place to live. That should be enough right?

For me, Piper is my favourite so far. At first, I thought she was obnoxious and a scaremongerer. But as I travelled with her, she proved to have a strong sense of altruism and a very good reason behind her style of reporting.

Also, does the game end once you do the last story quest? As in, you can't do side quests afterwards?

Doesn't end after, you're thrown right back into the game. I thought the main story was pretty weak BTW so I wouldn't rush to complete that

ah, yes. my water empire is coming along nicely. soon all of the commonwealth will be smothered by my stranglehold on purified water and adhesive.

Good, good! I was worried I would leave a bunch of stuff unfinished. But yeah, I wasn't planning to get to the main quest anytime soon anyway. I want to see how much of a melee tank I can become.

Very Hard, for now. Sometimes it feels a little easy, but tougher fights are a challenge so I think it's about right. Next run I plan to do survival from the start.

By the way, you should consider the Pain Train perk. It's quite useful, plus it's hilarious fighting enemies by running into them.

Tell me about the cat quest, plz

Also: I've gone up to Survival difficulty. I'm still killing people pretty easily, but the nerfed healing is making me play much more tactically. It's good.

there's actually like 2 or 3 quests in that vault. and a bobblehead. i think the last quest bugged for me and never triggered so i just noclipped to get the bobblehead. anyway, bumble around the vault and find some girl who is sad about her cat being gone, tell her you saw it run away and then go rescue it. from there the rest of the quests should trigger.

My favourite was a Chinese officer sword that caused bleeding damage. I could slice an enemy, wait a few seconds and they'd die on their own.

But I gave that to Piper. Got myself a super sledge, now.

Thanks, m8. Will do it shortly.

also, there is a master level terminal in the reactor room. hack it and read everything on there. if you cant hack it bring the detective and tell him to do it for you, or cheat. it just has backstory info but check it out
