Yes! They've actually done this with other primates, including apes and they give birth to a baby that faces away. Scientists probably just assumed that all primates do this.

Having delivered a baby back at age 17 ...a best friend called me on phone and I got there about 4 mins b4 Paramedics and had baby in my hands - I can testify it ain't perty to view much less b who delivers. Repeated with some real training years later in Afghanistan, where men usually are not allowed to assist or help. That because of the training was far more better.
