I am thinking of getting this for my mother so she could watch Netflix and Hulu on a screen in her room that isn't her laptop or tablet with the poor audio. I already checked the back of her TV to see if it has an USB slot and it has one.
So my opening question(s) is...
How does Chromecast work exactly?
What happens after you plug in the device and it connects to your WiFi network?
Anything else I should know to make sure it's comparable with my mother's TV?

The Chromecast is a small dongle thingie which works in one of two ways: either streaming where your device tells Chromecast to stream media, or tab casting where you cast whatever's on your Chrome tab. Both the Chromecast and your computer have to be on the same WiFi network.
For doing it off a laptop, you'll need Chrome (obviously) and the Chromecast extension from the Chrome store.
Any TV with an HDMI port should be good to go. You'll also need a USB port or wall adapter to power the Chromecast.

It looks like she has the hook up connections for it.
Can she use her tablet, it's a Nook, she uses her tablet all of the time.
Is all she needs for that end, Chrome, the Chromecast app, and what else?

Question about the apps, does this use service's main apps or did they make a specialized app for it?
Like would the Netflix app still work with it?

I dont have netflix. The chromecast literally casts the chrome browser to the screen. It's not called a nookcast is it

The Chrome browser is available for the Nook. I also just checked and the Chromecast app can be installed according to the install button.
I'm just wondering how it actually works, but I guess a YouTube video could explain it better.

From researching, I'm a little nervous that this might not be the right gift.
I want to get her something that allows her to watch Netflix/Hulu from her TV since she wanted to watch stuff there except she'd either have to watch it on her laptop which she allowed to fall into disarray or on her tablet with horrible audio for streaming services.
Can someone recommend me something that just allows her to hook it up to the TV and then connect to WiFi?
Sort of like a console except made for streaming services.
I'm looking into Roku, but I'm still unsure if this is what I am thinking of.

I'm just scared about it running choppy since I watched a video on YouTube about the Chromecast where a guy was casting from his laptop and the stream was far ahead of the TV.
I guess I had misconceptions about Chromecast. I thought it was merely a device that connected to your WiFi and allows you to access your apps via a GUI much like you would if you owned a video game console. You know, for people who do not play video games.

the chrome cast works with a handful of apps on the android marketplace or App Store. they will have a little chrome cast button and will stream to the television. Lag on streams doesn't matter bc the chrome cast doesn't jitter
The only real downside is that there are so few compatible apps
I only ever used YouTube and Netflix but both of those worked great if you just want to watch YouTube or Netflix on a tv screen the chrome cast is perfect for it

And I'm sure they work better now that they made a new model, increased compatibility etc
I am speaking of my experience with the old one when it came out
