They're dumbing it down. Normally I would just ignore them, but they're getting popular and getting nominated for so many awards that they're basically paving the way for a bunch of even more shitty "folk" bands. People eat that shit up and think it's deep when they're missing out on so much great stuff. The only review site that calls them out is Pitchfork, but of course they don't "count" because everyone thinks they're the obtuse "hipster" site. Basically, they're sending a message: "Hey kids, you don't actually have to be intellectual to make folk music, you just need to add a banjo player and quote Shakespeare and people will think you're hot shit!"
As for quality folk, check out Nick Drake, Skip James (if you're into 30's stuff), Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg (he spawned a subgenre called folk-punk which is more of an acquired taste), early Beck (before Stereopathetic Soulmanure, albums like One Foot In the Grave and Don't Get Bent Out of Shape), some Sufjan Stevens, and Neutral Milk Hotel (their first album is acid-folk/fuzz-folk, but In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has a much tamer sound)
