So think about this if you have ever played Programmer. One way is ideal for programming and the other way is not. Think parsing and and the other would be wayyyyy to much of a hint.
I am super busy re work again or I would look up the advantage to one side of road vs other - if memory serves me correct? One is more better then other and I have sure learned how to do both over and over and over again. Why? The day depends on the year and is meaningless without it. If you're looking for yesterday's date, and the data spans multiple years, you can't just stop reading at "22/04" (April 22). That could refer to any of thousands of days. "2011/04" (April, 2011), on the other hand, is entirely unambiguous (unless your records predate Jesus). It's also easier to sort.

If I was talking to a time traveller, I wouldn't start by explaining "it's the 23rd". The year is most important unless we already know it.
