Back in my dark ages aka Middle School we called it Jr High - Those middle school years we used the term Queer as a name caller but no one I new had a clue there were dudes fucking a sewer pipe.
No one in my circle of friends in high school new anyone who was gay. Discovered years later on classmates.com a class mate, gal I new who had married with kids ended up an open lesbian in a sorta marriage
Me thinks I was in my late 20's before I even met anyone who was openly faggot. I do remember the shock in 1962 when watching the movie Lawrence of Arabia, where Lawrence gets raped.

I have friends who are gay-lesbian. Just takes me a bit longer to accept them. They also are well aware its not all that easy for me.
There is an event I go to each year in Long Beach CA - Is held at the same time a Tattoo convention in held - I go to the Cajun event and a group of Lesbians always comes over to spend a few hours at the Cajun event - over the years we end up spending time together and I end up as about the only guy they will dance with - So it was great pleasure a few years ago when one of them said to me - I have yet to try it with a male but if I decide YOU will be my choice - Big smiles from me each year when I see her.
Buy yea I grew up with no clue gays existed for lots of years so I think you can understand why its just not wot I see as normal. I supported the marriage thing cause I cannot see where its GOV business to control who loves Whom. I voted here in Calif for it - It lost - courts overturned it and Super Court recently said its ok -
