Tara Hudson, 26, from Bath, was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail after admitting assault.
She has had reconstructive surgery and lived as a woman all her adult life but, because she is legally a man, was sent to the all male HMP Bristol.
Her supporters claim it has placed her in danger of abuse and sexual violence.
Hudson was sent to prison on Friday after pleading guilty, at Bath Magistrates' Court, to an assault by beating on 26 December last year.
Her mother, Jackie Brooklyn, said the prison sentence came as a "shock".

that's funny, i was at a restaurant one night after we all went to a club and there was a huge fight with a tranny right in the middle of the restaurant. they were leaving and some guy muttered "tranny" under his breath evidently and the chick went nuts. lots of drunken screaming and many people got hit trying to break it up. she was wearing heels and tried to drop kick the guy in the neck - missed - and fell down. bunch of people pinned her down and they called the cops and she ended up being man handled during the arrest and she tried to hit one of the cops. it was a massive disruption, people had to get out of their chairs because she was swinging her purse around and hitting everyone. there was food everywhere, and everyone was super pissed and snapping pics of the whole thing. even the restaurant manager got involved and was just trying to keep his restaurant and patrons from getting hurt but she ended up making his nose bleed AND busted out the whole front glass window. Even people on ethe patio had to get up because of shattered glass everywhere.
it was an awesome sight. i've never, EVER seen a girl fight so fucking hard and cause so much collateral damage. shut the whole place down, for real. cops dragged her away kicking and screaming, even made the paper the next day. i just had a real hard time believing it was a girl, but, you'd look at her and think, "oh what a delicate lil' flower- Argh, fuck, i've been kicked in the throat, ack, Argh, eek, help~
