I thought you could summon it in face down defense mode, just not face up. It has been like 10 years since I touched a yugioh card though so I don't know.

It's considered "setting" when you place it in face down defense mode. It is only summoned when you turn it face up (on your turn).

Wow! I totally forgot that terminology split but yeah that sounds right. Summoned face up or set then flip summoned. I sort of wish I didn't give away my old deck to my friends. Bye bye 1st ed. Mirror force and monster reborn :(.

A long time ago I had a Fiend deck where I was replacing all the common versions or cards like Monster Reborn and Summoned Skull with the rarer versions. At some point my mom confiscated it, and I think she may have thrown it out. She confiscated stuff pretty often but she usually hid it somewhere in her closet or the basement. That deck is the only thing she took that I've never found. ;_;
