Opinion: As an unbiased news source dedicated to bringing you news from around the U.S., U.K., Russia, and the world. It would pain us not to express our patriotism by saying that it is good for Russia to finally be re-entering the space race after we had lost to the Americans in 1969. We would also like to say that we find the mere idea of going up there to remove the Old Glory flag to be insulting.

Question: How do you feel about a possible ESA/Russian base on the dark side of the Moon?

it really needs to be done before any attempt at putting men on mars happens. going back to the moon and looking towards permanent habitation is the next logical step beyond space stations. communication is easier, resupply is easier, landing is easier, the whole thing is just easier and will make a nice test bed for building habitats and all that. i haven't really been all that convinced a mars mission in the 30s is attainable because we're not outside of LEO quite yet. sure we've got a shit ton of hours in orbit, but human time spent outside of that can be counted in mere months if not just a few weeks.

the international space station took 10 years just to assemble. they're looking at lunar exploration missions in 2020, it'll be another 5 or 10 years of launching shit and landing it and putting it together just to build the first small lunar colony capable of sustaining permanent settlement of like 6 people.

honestly, short of a miracle injection of cash into world space programs and an immediate ramp-up of research OR some remarkable cost saving measures are achieved we're not going to mars by 2030. they're only just now starting to test whether the kind of magnetic shielding that'll be necessary for interplanetary travel will even work using today's technology. if not, then they'll need to use some other kind of shielding OR risk killing everyone. the three day trip to the moon is relatively safe because you're limiting your exposure to around a week, but as i understand it the apollo astronauts took a huge risk, if they'd been hit with enough solar radiation it could've kill them. in fact if apollo 17 had launched on schedule then they would've died in space during a huge solar flare.

Maybe the magnetic shielding (technically superconductive electromagnetic shielding) works but it's a long time away from flight. it's going to consume just tons of power. they'll need to probably launch a nuclear reactor to power the whole thing. i'm betting money right now that that shit won't run off of batteries and solar panels. it needs a submarine engine, watch.

they'll be working out the plan to mars for a generation. we're not talking disposable capsules anymore. we're at least talking about strapping huge ion engines to a space station type vessel with nuclear generators. i hope i live to see it.

Can't we go with America instead? I don't want to go to space with an asshole country like Russia. :(

You're coming too, buddy. Do you really want to be stuck up there with Russia? They might threaten or beat us up if we don't go along with their interests.

It's not gay if it's on the moon.
