No, Becky. What they're saying is that they can alter cognitive function and decision making by temporarily disrupting neurones in the brain. This is widely-used in Psychological experiments, and can do many things such as affecting judgement or making your hand twitch. But it's all just temporary. It's not permanent, as your headline implied.
I'm not sure if you're mocking the article or the scientists. The latter is possible, given that you're religious yourself and dislike Psychology.

This is widely-used in Psychological experiments, and can do many things such as affecting judgement or making your hand twitch. But it's all just temporary. It's not permanent, as your headline implied.

Wow, the author certainly seems to have an axe to grind. I liked how he pointed out that Likert-type scales are ordinal data and then went nowhere with that fact. He stopped short of what could have been some good criticism of the statistics involved and swung suddenly over to talking about vague comparisons and less relevant pop science.
All in all I suppose I'm probably in the same camp as the author in that I'm annoyed by what passes for science reporting by journalists trying get a sensational headline, but I feel like this guy would have been better off debunking the sensationalist headline rather than vomiting up a bunch of half-criticisms.

there's some dude who made an electromagnet hat or something and put people in a dark room, and when they turned on the hat people had "religious experiences," and they think that there is a region of the brain that causes people to "feel a presence and feel oddly calm" and stuff. people said they felt the presence of god.

for an all powerful deity i would think he could come up with more convincing methods of making himself known. he could just pop by and say hello to everyone. introduce himself directly and clear up a few inconsistencies with human belief systems.

Back in the 70's I worked with a guy who was getting out of the EE Engineering design game to become a quack type Doctor - Chiropractor school and he was doing a few hours of Intern with a Quack who was using powerful electromagnets on the brain of patients - forget what they were trying to do with that technology.
