The tracking info was fucked, but I still wound up getting it today. Haven't yet played any games, but you can also use it to control the mouse in windows which I've played briefly with so far. That works pretty good.
I was a little worried it was broken at first because the mouse control was fucking up, but a second later steam offered to update the controller's firmware which resolved everything. I will post more reviews ITT when I get to playing games.

You had to pre-order before a specific date to get them early. Your steam purchase history contains info about the controller, and if it doesn't say it has been shipped yet with an estimated shipping date of today you'll get it around nov 10, probably.

Rocket League
Just fucked around a bit in this game, and it is excellent! It definitely takes some getting used to the controller, but after about 15 minutes of practice against bots I already feel comfortable going up against other players, and won my first game.
The controller has a trackpad, and a large dpad (not sure if it does anything more than just being a dpad, it looks like it is some kind of clickable trackpad), a stick, the usual abxy buttons, two triggers, two buttons behind the triggers that idk what they're called but 360 controller has those too, and then two special grip buttons on the back. I wasn't sure if the grip buttons on the back would provide much utility, but for rocket league, they most definitely do.
The trackpad is used for controlling the camera, and it is a LOT more precise than the stick the 360 controller had. The stick of this controller is quite precise as well. It is also a bit smaller, which I like. The grip buttons on the back are just mapped to X and Y in my current layout, but since you often want to press both B, A and X at the same time in Rocket League this is quite helpful.
Vibration does not seem to work properly, but the controller does support it and it does vibrate under other circumstances, so maybe this is a bug or I have not yet figured out how to configure that.

General Info
The steam controller requires two AA batteries to run, and comes with its own wireless dongle. It can also be connected using a micro-usb cable, however. I assume that you do not need batteries if you do this. The controller is a little bit heavier than my wired xbox 360 controller, but not noticeably so.
You do need steam on your computer to make full use of it, and I'm not yet sure how this works with non-steam games. It does however let you control the mouse in windows which also works very nicely. Not sure what other general info to provide, but happy to answer questions.

@612,842 (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)I just tried Civ V for like 5-10 minutes, not really in the mood for Civ to keep playing with it, but it seems to work fairly well. Attached to this post is the default controller configuration for the game.
You can see that the right touchpad is used for the mouse, which works well. You can left click with the right trigger, and right click with the left. Sounds a bit weird, but is pretty intuitive. All actions seem accessible, the only "problem" is that moving the mouse around is a bit slower than with a normal, well, mouse. It's akin to a laptop trackpad, but a very good one at that.

Is the right trackpad configurable so that it can be used as a second analog stick?

The witcher 3 works pretty well too. Granted, that game has regular controller support so of course it should work.@previous (Catherine !TGirlYJKXM)
Everything is configurable. I haven't played with all the settings yet, but I don't see why that wouldn't work.
Another nice feature is that you can share your steam controller configuration for a game with other players, and steam will automatically use the most popular configuration. You can browse them all though. Also, game devs can provide an official configuration, and if they do that is used by default.

I bet it will. So far I am very positive. I just spent the evening on the couch playing rocket league and the witcher 3. I used steam in home streaming for the witcher 3 which was also superb. Looking forward to receiving my steam link so I don't have to lug around my laptop anymore as a receiver for the streaming.

Dunno, obviously haven't gotten the chance to try it yet. You also still need a beefy computer, with wired interet, running the games. It just streams them to a TV from there. And the computer cannot be used during.
I wouldn't preorder it at this time because there is apparently no early release for those.

Of course you can also put SteamOS on your own machine, but it's just linux that boots into steam's big picture mode. Windows seems like a better choice because it runs way more games. If you want to see what SteamOS is like just click on the controller icon next to the minimize one in steam.

I think it's even worse with iOS but not sure, never owned one myself. Windows 8 and 10 started including an app store of their own, so it's not too far fetched to imagine it'll head that way too.

Okay so it works, but aiming is shit. Tribes has no support for controllers so I had to set it to emulate a mouse and keyboard. It all works, but my aim is absolutely terrible. Wouldn't use this for actual playing of this game.

mine came this morning. haven't had a chance to use it yet. i'll get to try it out tomorrow. technically i gave it to my brother for his birthday so i'll get to play with it tomorrow night. i did get it out and mess with it, it has a nice feel to it. it's different, the face of the controller is concave, most controls these days have more of a convex face. but it's not uncomfortable. the buttons on the back have great placement, and i can hold all the trigger buttons with individual fingers and still feel like i've got a hold of it. the buttons had a decent enough action to them, and the track pads clicked nicely as well. looking forward to using it.
i've got another one on the way that i'll keep but it'll be a couple of weeks i suppose.

Playing some more rocket league now that I'm used to the controller, and it is great. It feels a lot more accurate than my 360 controller.
I also tried some FTL which is made for mouse+keyboard, and it was totally playable! I had to 'craft' my controller config myself because you're mapping buttons to actions without hints, and none of the pre-made social configs did it for me. But it worked quite well, since the entire game is playable with the mouse and the trackpad is very good.
I wouldn't play FTL with the controller if mouse+keyboard are an option, but when chilling on the couch it is an excellent option.

I just played the AoE2 HD remake, a game with absolutely no controller support, and it worked pretty good. I bound some of the more commonly used ones, but in the end I wound up just using the mouse most of the time. When not playing competetively against humans this is great.

@previous (G)yes, it is actually pretty good. i would still just use my mouse+keyboard when sitting at my desk, but when chilling on the couch I'll definitely be using the steam controller for this. see the attached image, the two circles are extremely sensitive touchpads that are fully configurable on what they do, and then you can bind the two triggers to left click and right click in such a way that you just have to very lightly squeeze them to cause a click. it works surprisingly good, i did not expect this.

there's a dude who made it to grand master's in star craft 2 playing with an xbox controller. i doubt i could do it, i doubt i'd want to do it, but evidently RTS with gamepads is technically possible.

you can also set the trigger when fully depressed to do a different action, so like in an FPS you can put aim on "light squeeze" and fire on "tight squeeze." one button to do two actions, kinda cool.
i did get to play with the controller today at my brother's, we did some Killing Floor 2. the touch pads are very sensitive, it did take some getting used to. his kids have been using it for a couple of days, they're pretty good with it. i didn't get to try typing, but my nephew tried it and said it works better very well. he said it's fast. pretty cool device, i'm looking forward to mine getting here.
oh yeah, and i really like the size and shape, it fits my hands nicely and i can 4 finger the triggers and bumpers which is something that's not super comfortable with other game pads. i lose grip. this one though feels like they planned for 6 fingers on buttons. it's nice, i don't have to take my thumb off of rotation OR translation.

my brother tried it on GTA V and the default config he said acted like a virtual joystick. so yes. it's configurable as either a trackpad or a v-joy.
that was also something mentioned in the demo they did at gamescom (or wherever they demo'd it, pax maybe, idk).

playing some more of the witcher 3. the touch pad is a better joystick than an actual joystick, i made the left touchpad the joystick and am instead using the actual joystick as a dpad. this makes movement a lot more pleasant and means that i have both fingers on a touchpad most of the time

At the moment, yes. You need to have steam running for it to work at all, properly. When not using steam it acts as a very minimal mouse+keyboard. It can only be customized for applications that are launched through steam. You can add non-steam games to steam and that'll work like a charm, though. You also need to launch the games from big-picture mode. I expect all of this to change eventually when either Steam develops a proper driver, or some third party does.

I told you "Everything is configurable. I haven't played with all the settings yet, but I don't see why that wouldn't work." and provided a screenshot that showed the trackpad configured as a joystick.

I might as well ask this here. A friend of mine gave me a link to a PC build that he says is a "mini powerhouse" and if I spend a few more dollars for a 960 instead of a 750 it'll be boss.Just wondering if you all agree.

That cpu is probably a bit weak but really not too sure. I'm not great with picking out hardware. Head over to /r/buildapc and post your build there and ask for advice. Also do some lurking. And read the sidebar.

Not entirely sure what exactly the difference is, haven't played with that. I could check tonight. But basically one is optimized for controlling character movement (left stick usually) and the other for camera control (right stick usually)

Actually, that probably sums up the two already, derp.
Move for character movement and camera for camera controls.
Not entirely sure why you would want to figure both pads to be analog when there is an analog stick already attached.

Because it's more pleasant to use than the analog stick in some circumstances. For the witcher 3 I have both pads set to joysticks and the actual joystick set to the dpad. But for rocket league I prefer the actual joystick for movement.

oh, wow. check this out. dude has it setup where he used the gyroscope for fine tune aiming, so everything remains the same with the thumb pad-as-mouse setup, but when he holds his thumb in one place he has gyroscopic control of fine tuning the aim.
in practice it looks awesome. like, really really good. i'm absolutely giving this a try.

I've tried this, and I see the potential, but it means you must sit leaned forward so you can freely move the controller, fine if you are tryharding I guess. And it does work quite well when you do that. I tend to sit with my legs up and my hands resting on them, so I don't really like moving the controller around much. But then again, I am usually just chilling instead of trying to shoot bitches.
I have played some half life 2 with the controller and it is excellent. Works really well. Portal 2 is good as well.

So they just added this really neat feature. You can have an in-game overlay show up with you touch one of the touchpads, with up to 16 buttons!
