Minichan now has (purely textual) ads. Enjoy!
Each ad will have a [hide] button next to it which will ensure you do not see it again for three weeks (using cookies). You are served one ad every 10 topics you visit. If you want to permanently get rid of them all just add ##.banner as an adblock filter.

will banned users receive ads for your assisted suicide services?
r04r replied with this 11 years ago, 43 seconds later, 6 hours after the original post[^][v]#610,992
@previous (FuckAlms !vX8K53rFBI)
No, since they will not be able to view the thread. They will however get an ad for VPN services if they wish to evade their ban! See http://minichan.org/test_ban.php
And remember, being banned must be a cheerful experience so no talks about suicide.

Oh, okay. Feel free to click the hide button (or use adblock) btw if it happens to annoy you. Also I might make them less frequent, though I do intend to add some more funny ones to the rotation.

Oh, I get it now. I'd only seen the VPN one earlier.

Thanks, I had a GIMP draw it for me. Oh hey, could I get a secret from you? I was fucking around with the partition scheme on my HD and had to move my MC share folder. Apparently there is no easy way to just change the target directory.

Mostly an experiment to see if it raises any $$$ whatsoever. They're primarily meant to target one-shot visitors who wind up here through google, so I've tried to make them as least invasive if possible. I may also just wind up removing them entirely, or add a bunch of "joke" ones. If you have any comments about them, I would gladly hear them.

I just blocked them anyway, so I don't really have an opinion anymore.
Sure, if they can make the site a little money then go ahead.

Fair enough. For what it's worth the hide button takes that ad out of the rotation for three weeks when you click on it.

It's not intrusive so I won't bother blocking them. If you're targeting one-shot visitors, does that mean each new ID starts with the counter at 10?
r04r replied with this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 14 hours after the original post[^][v]#611,119
@previous (FuckAlms !vX8K53rFBI)
The counter is currently in the visitor's session data and not actually tied to their UID as such, and starts at 0, which also triggers an ad to show (%10==0). I might change this somewhat, but this was hacked together last night and I didn't feel like changing the database schema at the time.
@611,112 (RWBY Rhubarb? !!iNo3FkiZx)
Actually just curious, are you just fundamentally against ads, or do you consider these intrusive somehow? It's fine if you just dislike ads on principle, but I'd like to know if you find these intrusive, and specifically how come.

I tend to block them on principal. I might be a bit of an outlier, though, since I'm very particular about this sort of thing.
But I thought the ads themselves were very unobtrusive and sedated. So, as ads go, they were pretty good.

I will not be blocking them just to see if anything funny shows up.

You might still enjoy the hide button. It will place a cookie that causes that specific ad to not be shown for three weeks. New additions will still be shown, until you hide them.

The ads are the most unobtrusive, laid-back advertising on the web. They're not a bother. But that's good to know.

Although, I can still see them when I browse from my iPod. So I haven't quite escaped. ?
But yes, they're not too bad. They certainly don't hijack my bloody screen like most mobile ads.

I could add a switch to the dashboard to just permanently disable all advertising for your UID, if that would make you happy.
