uh, well unfortunately i think we've only seen the beginning of pressure cooker bomb type violence. One thing the media kinda kept sorta quiet after the boston bomber ordeal was that all that was used to make the bombs were off-the-rack fireworks bought around 4th of july. The mentioned it a few times that it looks like fire works were used, but they stopped short of a full report by suggesting fire works might not be powerful enough alone. We never really got full confirmation, but they never confirmed anything else was ultimately used. So it does seem like all they needed was about a hundred bucks worth of fireworks.
that makes me kind of uncomfortable, because fireworks are the easiest things in the world to buy. pretty sure the boston marathon isn't the last place we'll see firework bombs carried in backpacks.

I think shooting rampages and bombings are somewhat different. Someone going on a shooting spree is in a different mental state than someone planting a bomb. Yes, you can readily buy a lot of things that you can make into explosives. As someone who made (and had a lot of fun with and got arrested because of) bombs after getting my hands on The Anarchist's Cookbook as a kid, I am well aware of that. (I didn't hurt anyone, we were just 14 year old kids who wanted to watch things explode) Postal workers snap and shoot up their workplace. Mall employees snap and shoot up the mall they work at. Students snap and shoot up their school. But shootings are usually a very obvious and final act on the part of the shooter. Bombings, on the other hand, are usually made with the intent to be largely anonymous and watch the aftermath from afar.
It's not to say bombings can't happen, but I don't think bombings and mass shootings are rooted in the same psychological state.

hmm, interesting points. and yeah, you're probably right. i forget that they have these kinds of killers pretty well profiled. but the columbine kids did have pipe bombs (that either didn't work or didn't all get used) and Anders Brevik planted a bomb, but i guess Brevik is in his own fucking league. and i think the pipe bombing in these incidents of shooting might have been afterthoughts since they didn't really use them or make ones that work.

I'm sure there's some overlap, and if you're looking cause mayhem throwing pipe bombs will probably do it. I'm just saying there is a different mindset to the crimes in general - a different level of ownership maybe? The guys who bombed the the Boston Marathon or the Atlanta summer Olympics were looking for the focus to be on their crimes rather than themselves. People like the Virginia Tech shooter or the kids at Columbine wanted the attention on themselves.
But then terrorist groups will plant bombs and call in taking credit for the bombings much like serial killers will leave clues and take credit for killings. That very much shifts the focus from the crime to the criminal. I don't know. Maybe we need an expert here. Maybe Kook will chime in at some point.
