Topic: Uhm...I have this friend who's slightly overweight

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #46,282

...and he was wondering whether he'll lose his manboobs if he sheds a few pounds. He said he'd be most grateful for any advice on this subject.

He might. It would also help to develop some pecs with weight training. Has he had his hormones checked?

No, not yet, though it's a possibility. He likes to knock back few pints in the evening, and he read somewhere that excessive drinking can lower testosterone levels.

you can skip weight training unless you're looking to improve strength. the best bet for weight loss is the old 2 pronged approach of limiting calories and some kind of cardio. but, like, you don't want a starvation diet. that's for women in the 1980s and it didn't even work very well. imo the best approach is just lifestyle changes, you can "diet" and "workout" and lose weight, but you'll be right back where you were as soon as you stop and go back to your old lifestyle. lots of diets are basically recommending non-permanent quick fixes. like, how to get into your wedding dress in 2 weeks and then go back to the pastries.

lifestyle changes don't have to be drastic, either. diets and work out routines meant to shed pounds quick are also usually so disruptive (drink a protein shake for breakfast and lunch!) that you want to quit as soon as possible. they're also short term, like, do atkins for 90 days and see the results! instead of doing crash diets and joining gyms and crap, try small lifestyle changes and set yourself a goal of embracing a new healthy habit every three months. let yourself get used to the new slight change in routine, and then do something else healthy for yourself. once you've stacked enough healthy habits, and give it all enough time to become routine, then you'll start to see increasing benefits. in the beginning you might consider taking 2 healthy habits, one for eating and one for exercise, and add them work on incorporating both.

i have a couple of suggestions for healthy habits:
1.) i fucking hate dieting. i hate restricting myself and denying myself because i otherwise "lack control." so i don't. what i try to do, though, is learn to want to make healthier choices. THEN i'm not restricting myself at all, i'm doing what i want and what i WANT is the healthy choice. an example of how i accomplish this is Coka Cola. i fucking love coke. i could easily drink seven or eight a day. easily. a full 1/3 of my daily calories or more. i actually used to have trouble with this very thing. what i started doing was recognizing that i was fucking thirsty. my body wasn't craving coke, i was craving drink. so i augmented my routine, every single time i went to the fridge to pop open a coke, i instead got a glass of ice water and then went back to whatever i was doing. i would only drink a coke after the water was gone and i could pour the coke into the empty glass of ice. in the very beginning i would drink my water and then drink a coke. pretty much all i did all day was piss. but eventually i'd sit down with the water, drink it, and feel satisfied. like, i'd forget that i had wanted a coke and was happy with just the water. quickly, actually, i got to the point where i'd be thirsty for water and i wouldn't even bother with the coke. the biggest problem there, of course, was restricting the caffeine gave me headaches and made me crave caffeine drinks, but as the intake tapered off i got less dependent on it. The side effect was that i also drink less coffee (even though i still sugar it up pretty good.) but, i was cutting like 800-1000 calories a day from my diet and pounds literally melted off.
2.) a little bit of walking goes a long way. you don't have to like join a gym and lift all the time and become a jogger or anything like that to lose weight and be healthier. i cheat, because i have a dog. that compels me to go for walks, but if i wanted to i could just do short walks. i choose to go on 20-30 minute walks every night because it's good for me, but also it's good for my dog. this is also the perfect time of year to get out every day just to cruise around the block. i also try to look for ways to walk, i've got plenty of places nearby that i could drive to, but i choose to walk most times because it gets me my 20 minutes.

so really my point is you can have a really drastic impact with just very small lifestyle changes. so OP's friend can definitely and with minimally upsetting their lifestyle lose the man-boobs forever. it's almost always just a matter of a few bad habits that alone wouldn't amount to anything, but together cause a slight problem. so, modify a couple of habits and see what happens. but don't be trying to lose weight. that's a red herring. try to adopt healthier habits and make healthier choices and you'll lose weight as a result of that. it's also easier to see progress, because your focus is on those healthy habits and maintaining them. watching weight can be disheartening when you don't see immediate results. but, seeing yourself switch to water is observable and you'll feel accomplishment. eventually you'll see yourself or feel yourself getting thinner. don't even watch the scales. throw them out, they are misleading.
