i was confused about this for a long time, i thought it referred to native american territories, but it's the carribean countries, it has no relation to india so why do they call it the "west indies"?

the explorers weren't particularly smart. columbus was right about the world being round, but he vastly underestimated the size of it. he died honestly believing he had made it to india. having not been to india the traditional way, he pretty much only knew the indians had darker skin than the europeans, and native americans fit that bill.
