It really depends upon the food. If it's something flat and stable, such as a piece of toast or a slice of thin-crust pizza, then I like to eat around the edges of the food (but not all the way around, so as to leave a "handle"), then the middle, then the rest. However if the food is something more unstable, such as a burrito or a burger, I like to eat it side to side, front to back like @607,115 (H) If it's soup I use a spoon.
