It looks like NASA's plans for their #journeytomars involves establishing a Martian colony by using the materials found on the red planet along with 3D printing.

Now it makes me a little jealous knowing that I will never live on an extraterrestrial body.

nah, don't be envious, the trip is going to be painful. our bodies are so not designed to be in low gravity. if you survive and actually come back then you'll need a bunch of rehabilitation therapy just to walk comfortably. not to mention how it'll feel mentally being gone. we're a hundred years away from civilians rightfully feeling envious of people who can live/work in space. right now we should mostly feel admiration for the people who are capable.

also, start saving your money, Elon Musk is wanting to take tourists to mars for as little as half a million bucks within the next 30 years. and with some of the cutting edge research going into new experimental systems it is actually very possible space travel will be affordable in our lifetimes. It may not be that you'll live on Mars, but, maybe. just maybe, you'll get to vacation on the moon or maybe in an orbiting space station.

i mean, either one of those things i would spend quite a lot of money on.

I quickly Googled artificial gravity in response to your post, and yeah, apparently we don't quite have it developed. Yet.

So yes, leaving Earth would suck if it was a long-term trip. The different gravity causes health problems, apparently. Maybe once they develop some sort of artificial gravity, we can look to put oxygen domes on the moon, or something.

on the way there you can either rotate to induce centripetal gravity or you can constantly accelerate at 1g and simulate gravity, uh, linearly. the first method is complex, and because of Coriolis effects it can get you sea sick. it also requires either the entire ship to rotate, or parts of it to. If it all rotates, then you have to build a more robust vehicle to handle the forces, which means more weight, which means less people/science. However, a ship that has moving parts is even more complex and susceptible to mechanical failure.

the second method isn't currently achievable even with super efficient nuclear rockets (experimental/never been flown)

constant 1g acceleration requires a huge, huge, huge amount of reaction mass (fuel) and as far as i know it's an engineering impossibility. i may be wrong though.

then there's the EMdrive, which inexplicably works and has a theoretical ISP that's just enormous AND requires no reaction mass, just electrical energy. if that thing is actually really real and not just smoke and mirrors then it might actually be possible to do the constant 1g acceleration thing. which would be awesome - you get there much, much, much faster.

awesome, because if we can do that then it would eliminate complexity AND comfort problems. there'd be no sea sickness, and everything could be engineered with 1g in mind AND not require as many moving parts.

we could probably find a way to at least get there under full gravity, but i bet whatever method they go with they don't do full 1g anyway, probably some fraction similar to mars. 3/8ths i think. once you get there though there'd be no easy way to have more than mars gravity. i bet eventually you could build buildings that spin like amusement park centrifuges and give you a higher gravity load but that kinda engineering isn't happening on mars anytime soon (even if it's just a "gravity gym" and not a whole building).

And since the trips take something on the order of 18 months to 2 years or so you'll come back in pretty bad shape. but, 9 months there under full 1g, and 1 month on the surface at 3/8th, and then another 9 months under 1g would pose minimal risk to anyone's health. especially once mars does have a full station with a gravity gym :D

in like 60 years...

which is a lot of time for physicists to figure the fuck out of unified field theory, so maybe we'll have Star Trek gravity plates one of these days.

idk, that's a good question. the Orion program presumably. Then Elon Musk has his venture in mind. and really, they aren't both going to go... it's going to end up being a massive international endeavor funded by governments, space agencies, and private companies. Whatever they build, it's going to be enormously expensive. mars is really far and it's going to take years to complete missions. They're going to have to carry many, many tons just to support the crew, and one vehicle is going to be so enormously expensive that i doubt they'll build a bunch. Musk want's a space ship. think International Space Station with Engines on it jetting between the planets and using shuttle capsules to venture to the surface. it's going to cost hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars to make that kind of vehicle a reality.

The little capsules and systems they sent to the moon (a three day trip) aren't going to cut it for 9 month 1 way trips. the thing they send to mars will likely be one of the most expensive and complex things ever built, period. at least the human transport will be.

a lot of equipment and supplies can go to mars individually launched with simple boosters. but the crewed vehicle, it's not even designed yet.

NASA and SpaceX and everyone else are all working on pushing technology as far as we can and developing road maps for what kind of technologies are precursors to even talking about a manned trip. we'll need all kinds of new stuff, and right now they're still working on the ascent vehicle... so, we're not even to low earth orbit in our technological road map. eventually they'll get to a point where we actually look directly at earth-mars transit and THEN they'll be ready to build that bird. until then they spitball end-designs and work on making better engines and recovery systems for boosters and the like.

Then there's the question of cosmic radiation, not to mention solar winds and unpredictable flares. Even with the heaviest shielding available, it would be like living inside a microwave for eighteen months.

yeah, you need something like 2 meters of water around you in a shell, or some other kind of shielding that doesn't rightly exist. one cool experiment going on at NASA is to develop magnetic shielding, like some sci-fi star trek stuff. they're taking super conductive magnets normally used in super-colliders and figuring out how to put up a bubble around the vehicle similar to the earth's magnetic field.

Death Valley is really hot. (currently 107F / 42C) Living on Mars would be more like someone dropping you off in Antarctica and having to survive among rocks and ice and crushing cold with any hope of help, contact, or supplies months away. Except imagine also not having any air you can breathe.

Yea I had to look up just how low it goes.

The desert averages seven nights a year of freezing weather, which can occur in December, January and February. Any overnight frost normally thaws the next day, as daytime highs are typically always above 32 degrees.


Have been there only in winter months. It has many reasons for going there in the winter.

Just outside of where Cathy lives its totally inhospitable. One reason Cathy has to use a phone for therapy is because people with a decent education wood never stay where Cathy lives.
