Do you put it back in its right place or just stick it wherever?

Put it back in its right place if at all possible. If not, at least put a frozen thing back in a freezer, milk back in the fridge etc.

As a former retail associate, there is nothing I hate more than seeing miscellaneous cartons of milk stashed in various places throughout the store. People have some sort of weird impulse to hide items that they no longer want, which just makes associates' jobs harder when closing. Don't put it behind loaves of bread or under a pile of fruit. Just stick it back, and if that's not possible for whatever reason, put it in a visible place or tell an employee that you don't know where it goes. It is literally our job to put things back, and if you're not sure where something goes, it's 1000x better to ask than to guess or put it in some weird ass corner of the store. I've seen unopened (and opened) chip bags stuffed in the pockets of jackets we sell, and bananas placed on the bathroom counters. Don't do that. Just don't.

It depends. Because I will use any excuse to get some exercise in - I will go back and put the item back on shelf. 95% of the time. Early teen years of working in a market and memories of the employee tagged with doing take backs to restock from cash register - one of the most boring jobs of all in a market.
If in a rush I for sure will hand it to the cashier for the take back.
Stashing any item that should remain cold or frozen is not only not nice - it may end up back in the case defrosted and end up at a home in messed up condition. Or even grow bacteria.
