Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #45,850

I cannot believe I did not see it earlier. I am curious as to how many of the posters here are mentally ill. The way I ended up here was through another website run by a fellow insane people, so naturally I wonder.

It is funny that you should ask. I am a doctoral student in psychology, and like many (most?) psychologists or aspiring psychologists, I do have mental illness. I suffer from Depression and Bi-Polar Disorder mostly. What about you?

Well, Depression is nothing to sneeze at. I also have mild OCD. How does yours manifest? For me, I always feel like I need to be touched on my left side if I have been touched on my right, and I count stairs when I walk down them to be sure I land on the left foot.

Oh, a fellow Psychologist. I myself am a Psychology student studying for my degree. I'm currently doing a work placement (internship) as an honorary assistant psychologist. Then next year I'll go back to Uni for the final year to get the degree.

Do you have any specific career aspirations with your Psychology qualification?

Hey, that is great! Which degree are you pursuing? Honorary assistant psychologist sounds very good. What is your specialty? My dissertation involves criminal psychology, in particular serial killers. It is a very depressing study, but interesting. My goal is to be able to somehow work with the worst, most criminal psychopaths, and try to develop methods to treat them (currently there are few or none), in the hope of finding psychopaths early in life, pre-crime, and helping them to change.

The degree I'm doing is called BSc Hons Psychology. It's a general Psychology degree, as I understand it.

I don't have specialty yet, I'm not far along enough for that. Though, currently, my ideal careers would be some sort of clinical psychologist or a researcher. Either would interest me, I think.

That is a very noble goal you have, about treating psychopaths and serial killers. But do you think it's possible with the current research? As I understand it, often, their very brain structure is messed up. It's my impression that they can function if you direct their behaviour to something positive, but I'd imagine you can't easily identify them early and then get them out of harmful environments.

Current research indicates that psychopaths lack empathy, which seems to be the main driving force behind human morality. Without it, they literally see no reason to behave. But, the very latest, cutting-edge research, has shown a little progress in training them to cognitively recognize behavioral patters in others and imitate them. Their reward is that, generally, their lives improve in all ways. This is not the same as "charming" which many of them do, by imitating others in order to manipulate them. This is actual therapy that tries to establish, in their minds, a logical connection between "acting good" and "my life improves". Other than that, they are almost untreatable.

I find it disconcerting that you'd be allowed near anyone for the purpose of psychologically treating them.
Not that I don't piss all over your profession anyway. When wealth bestows upon me, I will make it my duty to engage in a clandestine murder of a psychiatrist as my life's passion.
