Not every prostitute is the stereotypical sad, struggling woman who solicits around run-down streets, is a druggie and answers to a domineering pimp. Some (like the "high-class" ones OP is referring to) likely have better lives, so the type you described won't really fit. Others might be independent. It's not exactly a uniform profession.
So you can't really make such a blanket statement saying all prostitution is demeaning to women. Just a certain kind to women.

I don't really need in-depth knowledge to know that not every prostitute is degraded and miserable.
My concern is that that sort of generalised thinking of it as inversely degrading plays into the hands of the sort of right-wingers who despise prpstitution because it's "immoral" or "unchristian" and would just try to ban it all.
Instead, I think it's better to accept that it happens and for the state to make laws that try to protect prostitutes. That way it's not such a shady business and is (hopefully) less prone to exploitation.
