But one does not learn much from doing it that way. My earliest memory of electronics at age 5 was taking apart a tossed out radio. Will never forget unwinding the Litz wire inside an IF can. Stuff just seemed to come out for miles n miles.

why would anyone even do that, you can buy kits to fix shitty little battery clocks for 3 dollars on amazon. get the parts, boom, done.
also, a raspberry pi is overkill. you need a handful of inexpensive parts from radio shack and a soldering iron if you want to make your own. the kid would learn more with a 6 dollar breadboard and those little booklets they sell with simple projects (like clocks) at electronic stores.
