I cannot stand sports enthusiasm and fanaticism. Most men are sports fanatics. But to me, it is all about devoting your life, to watching men whom you do not know and have never met, throwing balls around. What could be more mindless and anti-intellectual? I could understand if you are actually playing sports, fine. But merely watching other people play instead?

I don't care about sports, I walked by the most popular athlete on the local baseball team at the time they had just broken a draught of no championships in the city, and didnt know who he was. I did notice him, though, cause he had so much presence. Huge and good looking. I instantly thought "he's fucking that hot chick outside." Saw them in the paper two days later (with their dog, who I also saw, Im such a starfucker), was totally right. Some people are just physiologically above the rest of us.
However, I do enjoy watching amazing feats of athletics. Basketball, football, baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis, whatever, but Basketball, Football and Baseball seem to have the most appeal in that regard. I recently considered getting into basketball to have something to do. However, I enjoy watching exciting basketball, and don't know if I could handle average games, which I imagine would be the most often.

OK, you make a decent point. I can understand enjoying watching amazing athletic feats. I guess I am mainly thinking of the guys whose lives literally revolve around watching sports.

Its a hobby. You can join a team and feel invested in their success, which can have a profound emotional responses. I can definitely see the appeal. Being part of a team that "wins" is an incredible feeling. When a team wins the championship, city streets are flooded with people (unless its a team that wins routinely in recent years). They practically rioted in my city.

Not at all, as I said, people become emotionally invested, and it can cause insane highs (as well as lows). I find live football, arena soccer (never been to any other kind of soccer game except kids) to be really entertaining. Live baseball I find boring. Havent really seen anythign else.. hockey and basketball both look good cause they're back and forth action.
People watch other people play video games. Watching Bob Ross paint is extremely engrossing (its like meditation, especially with his voice and inflection). I think you personally just dont find the appeal in sports, but the fandom itself is not particularly unusual. What I do find odd is that he has a cultural respect that other hobbies seem to lack.

I have been to a live baseball game, and it was fun, I admit. I guess my point is this. Let's say someone said, "My hobby is carpentry." Then, you find out that he doe snot actually do carpentry, but just watches people do it. What would you think?

I would think thats fine. You can appreciate carpentry, and the products of the work and effort without doing it yourself. There are people who watch people do hobbyist stuff, and Im sure there are some who just watch, and don't do it themselves. As you yourself found, there are benefits to being a spectator of sports.

I like figure skating, Iron Man contests, Lumber Jack contests, slam dunk contests, some dancing, women's softball and rugby, hockey if people fight, and Ninja Warrior.

Basketball is boring. Even the so called most exciting game can be skipped entirely and you just watch the last 30 seconds or so.
