I almost played an entire night as my newest creation, Dr. Richard Richards, who just purchased a community lot and is now running a restaurant by himself. Future plans includes a spy/gym/salon next door so his little plaza era will become his care center that he always wanted to run.
He is a college graduate with a degree in biology yet I cannot seem to get him a job in the medical field and I have no idea what the levels are that they start at to know if the degree means anything.
The ability to create and control a character called a "sim", short for Simulated Simon. You can command your "sim" through a series of clicks on it and its surroundings then selecting an action. The object of your "sim" is to earn money through a job.

Pets were first introduced in The Sims 1. Also, Sims 2 introduced businesses and business management gameplay, university and college gameplay, more nightlife activities than you can get in Hot Date, much more vacation activities than what you can find in Vacation, weather and seasons, more hobby gameplay, and even apartments. Plus it has several different life states to play as and in Sims 3 it added quite a bit more.
