I believe this to be a poor, perhaps even terrible assessment of modern video games.

@OP
It's called growing up. Stop playing with toys and get a real hobby.

Nostalgia probably. I thought that video games were better and more difficult back when I was a child, but I don't think that's the case anymore. Back then, games like Sonic the Hedgehog (the original series) seemed innovative at the time, but the games had no replay value. Today you have games like Skyrim and GTA that you can still go back to and play. My only complaint is that modern games may focus too much on multiplayer and lack in the single player experience.

if the quality gets so close to reality that it is disgusting, I wonder how that will take with the public

100% the problem is publishers. games are just another cash grab and they don't make them even for the same reasons people produce movies. there is love for movies IN the movie industry, hell, they even pat themselves on the back once a year and award people for making "art." but people behind game publishing are after a quick buck and are far removed from the process.

games are the equivalent of a hastily produced super hero movie. and there are very few games that can vie for being considered "art." less games than movies, that's for sure.

anyway, they've geen raping the game industry like a painted whore for 15 years, and that's the problem. there's no innovation anymore because the safe buck is all the publishers care about since games are "toys," as you say, and not art.
