I think smart watches are where PDAs were in 2000: neat toy but not really useful or life changing. It's another gadget to charge and keep up with.

Also batteries: every Li-ion battery I've had has crapped out after two years. $199 is a lot for a watch you'll have to toss in a couple years. I would personally wait till solar ones come out. A watch you have to mess with on a daily or weekly basis is just nuts.

Battery powered quartz watches have been mainstream for 40 years. I personally own no fewer than four mechanical watches. But for me recharging a watch weekly would bug the shit out of me.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying I don't think it's mature yet. If you want to be an early adopter and have the latest gadget then by àll means jump in. But I would wait a couple years until solar ones come out.

The pebble watch is supposed to last 5-10 days. I think I'd be okay with that, and have serious doubt about a smartwatch being able to keep itself properly powered using solar. I also think it would need a breakthrough in solar panels, both for flexibility and possibly combining one with a display or something. Not sure where else you'd put them.
The battery dying is a concern, but since it only has a charge cycle every 5-10 days instead of daily this takes a bit longer than with phones. If it lasts 3-4 years I'll be happy, and I'm fairly sure that it will.

I wonder if people are going to want to keep a smartwatch as long as they would a proper watch? I think they will be replaced pretty quickly like phones. Especially in the early days.

I have no idea, this is one of my concerns. I should see if a store near me sells them and has them for display. Probably not, but worth a shot. I assume control is very limited, but it's not like you can run regular apps on them anyway. There's special "pebble apps", which I assume are made for this method of control. It's also e-ink so the refresh rate is shit anyway which excludes some use cases.

Good question. Regular watches don't really go obsolete and they have standardized, easily replaceable batteries (which last 3-5 years, and cost under $10 and 10 minutes to change) so they can be kept for decades.
Probably you are right, and people wouldn't want to keep it because in 2017 they'll have the Pebble 2 or Pebble 3 with better screen and more bluetooths or whatever. Inguess what bugs me is that the smartwatch doesn't replace the smartphone. Like, the smartphone killed the mp3 player and PDA market because it replaced them: it did everything they could do better. I frankly don't see the point of a smartwatch. It will tell you about your texts and the weather and how many steps you took and that's about it as far as I can see.

I mean you can still buy them, but they're getting fewer and fewer in stores. Why buy one when any smartphone will play digital audio just as well through a 3.5mm jack? What's the benefit of carrying an mp3 player and a smartphone?

I have the Samsung Gear 2 Neo. I paid $200 for it and the battery can easily last 4-5 days on one charge, longer if I'm more conservative with it. I've had it for about a year and a half now and the battery is showing no sign of degrading.
I won't get into all the things that make it useful, because I've already made lists in other threads, but assure you it really is useful and not gimmicky. I like not having to take my phone out of my pocket for every little thing. Just like you don't like to get on the desktop PC to do something that can accomplished on my phone, I don't like to take my phone out for things that can be done on my watch.

The Pebble Time is in fact the second version already.

It doesn't need to replace the smartphone though, it needs to replace a normal watch. It does everything a watch can, functionally, and at the benefit of notifications and Siri/Google Now type functions on your wrist so you don't need to get out your phone.
