I'm thinking that it was the abject failiure that really built up his misogyny. When you've failed in life as many times as Matt, the mind can start to look at alternate means of self-validation. So Matt has convinced himself that he (a man) is innately superior to several other people (women).
It is one of the only surefire ways that the brain can keep his self-esteem at reasonable level in the face of such a fundamental failiure at succeeding in life. Otherwise, he would simply commit suicide.
