Topic: Are patent lawsuits likely to decrease or increase innovation in the United States?

I think patent trolls may cause an influx of innovation during the time their patents apply to specific uses of the technology involved. An example of this is patenting the use of specific types of gyroscopic sensors for use in interactive electronic entertainment. Once the technology was proven in the field of gaming there was a rush to market.
Haven't a lot of implementations of "motion gaming" become successful in the wake of a patent troll sitting on a novel use of technology?

Would a lengthy legal battle have slowed things down or just cause more solutions to be found?
