When i open up my new pack of cigarettes, i leave the plastic where ever i stand at the moment. My cat collects all that plastic and puts it in its water bowl. It also frequently seems to be role playing that the plastic wrapping is some kind of a prey and so it walks with that plastic in its mouth, presenting it proudly and victorious.

Most feline behaviorists have come to believe that some cats find a slight odor to the plastic and/or film surfaces simply irresistible, and also that the coolness and texture of the plastic and/or film must feel and taste good on the cat’s tongue. It may also be another form of trying to “nurse” - sort of a feline “oral compulsive” behavior.

I grew up in the era of pencils for the first dozen or so years of my life. It was common for people to chew on the wood. Don't remember if I did that. It was also a good way to keep people from stealing your pencil. No one wanted a pencil with someones bit marks on it.

Well now i am just confused. My cat would bring that plastic and present it to its kittens yet be utterly confused when the kittens could not care less about that plastic trash. I guess its a mix of both worlds, its irresistible to it and it thinks its a prey.

Looking up the Psychology of cat behavior - experts end up guessing a bunch. There is apparently no consistency.
During my growing up years we only had dogs. Mom loves birds in the garden so Cats were prohibited. My experience is limited to cats that belonged to girlfriends.
I marvel at their behavior.

my cat likes plastic bags too. like the grocery store kind. i can't leave any sitting out or she'll tear into it and i think maybe eat some, idk.
