Chinese cultural point: in China, there is a word called 热闹. The closest English translation might be something like, "buzz". or "noisy attraction", or something like that. It is a phenomenon in Chinese culture. Chinese people love colors, noise, food, laughing, smacking, talking, and other such things. So, in China, noisy, hectic things attract lots of attention. That is why, in a Chinese restaurant, you will not find couples whispering sweet nothings in hushed tones with a glass of wine. Rather, you will find whole groups and families smacking, laughing, slurping, sipping, and having a great, boisterous, chaotic, loud, great time! I have come to really appreciate and love this aspect of Chinese culture. It is all about people, food, talking, laughter, and the social element. I love my home, but I have to say, I find it rather boring and quiet in comparison!

Sounds horrible. There are times when you gather a shitload of people and have a blast (protip: barbecues). But not being able to enjoy a classy restaurant meal cause you fucks fart and burp and laugh... ugh...

You're right, OP, I have never seen a large family group having a loud and grand ole time in a USAmerican "restaurant" (if you can truly even call them that).
