Either that, or go back to making year 8 the last mandatory year, with the requirement that these fuckers should have mastered some fucking basics, which means 30-40 percent of them would end up taking 12 years to do it anyway. But at least some people could get on with training for something they like rather than having to analyze god-damn literature 16 or 20 times over.

To be fair, the school situation in inner cities is beyond bad. I had friends who taught in my city in poor schools as well as friends who worked in these schools in some other capacity. They're shit. So even if the parents are involved (which isn't the case in a lot of families, the dad isn't even around, and we all know how poorly kids of single mothers end up typically), they're getting a subpar education.
They bus kids around to other districts, which is a good start but not enough. They need more funding, more after school programs, and they need to serve three squares a day, cause many kids have shitty parents that would rather shoot up or drink or smoke crack than feed their kids.

I miust disagreee. I do not want a society that does not know, understand, or appreciate art, literature, etc. I do not want a 100% pragmatic, industrial society. Our appreciation of beauty makes us human.

Not mandatory in school doesn't mean it won't exist. Many people don't care about art, and won't care about lessons about it. I think it would be better to invest the money now spent on teaching them on people that are interested.

My school stopped art class after year 7 or 8, and because I flowed into the practically expected academic stream, I never got to take the available art classes thereafter since there were all those three kinds of science and whatnot. As for appreciation, nothing killed my interest in story books as much as having to read and analyze the god damn shit out of them at home. I had no music classes offered after year 6. Because they format classes so that you only take 4 subjects per semester, there is no room for the wide variety of possibilities anyway. Then the cultish idea that homework is valuable precludes using much free time for such pursuits unless you just slack off from the official school shit.
