Yeah, comic book continuity can be very daunting. You can feel locked out by not having read all of the extensive stuff that came before.
Though with Batwoman, it's not actually that confusing. There was one version of her in the olden days that they stopped using, and then they brought in a new character to use the name in modern times. She's way easier to understand than the more established comic book characters.

It's not just the continuity on it's own so much for me. It's more that they just pretty much randomly seem to change things. Like Nick Fury conveniently retiring and being replaced by his son who looks just like Samuel Jackson, just as the Avengers got popular.
Also if you have a shared universe I think the stories need to be stylistically consistent which you won't really get if the stories have been written independently from each other to start with.

Yes but that is my point. Why can't they just exist in their own right? Why does it need to be in a shared universe? I myself have recently pretty much just been looking at manga, lately. Something I like about them compared to the mainstream western comics is how they're much more self-contained and usually don't have such convoluted, complex backgrounds to know about beforehand. I can just read the first volume, and go onwards from there.
Have you read Y: The Last Man? It's a very popular, standalone comic.

I have not. It seems kinda interesting. The only proper on-going comic I have read was TWD because it was in a Humble Bundle. I am currently waiting and checking ebay for the volumes to go on sale.
